In a close game the Cincinnati Reds got by the Chicago Cubs in 10 innings by
the score of 4 to 2.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Cincinnati came out
on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Dave Parker began the
Cincinnati spurt when he ripped a base-knock. Nick Esasky stepped up next
and he doubled resulting in a run. Tony Perez then was walked intentionally.
Dave Concepcion followed and he reached on an error. Buddy Bell stepped
into the box and delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning.
Cincinnati had 15 hits for the game and Chicago had 6.
Joe Price(1-2) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Price
was helped out by Ted Power who recorded his 8th save. The loss was charged
to Warren Brusstar(3-2) in relief. He pitched 2 innings allowing 4 hits and
1 walk.
Cincinnati now has a record of 16-23. Chicago has a record of 18-19 after the
loss.

In a close game it was the Los Angeles Dodgers 10, the Montreal Expos 8 in 12
innings at OLYMPIC STADIUM.
The score was tied at 8 after nine. Los Angeles won the hard fought contest
in the 12th inning. Bill Russell kicked off the action when he banged out a
single. Mariano Duncan came next and he drew a walk. Steve Yeager then laid
down a sacrifice bunt. Steve Sax came up and he slapped a base-hit plating
two runs. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
Ken Howell(2-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no
runs. Howell got help from Bob Welch who earned his 1st save. Bert
Roberge(0-1) took the loss in relief.

Catcher Gary Carter went yard and had 4 RBI and Sid Fernandez whiffed 10
batters at SHEA STADIUM as the New York Mets embarrassed the San Diego Padres
by the lopsided score of 11 to 1.
Carter enjoyed a big day at the plate. He doubled bringing in two baserunners
in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot (his 12th of the season) in the 4th
inning and doubled in the 6th inning. New York finished with 12 hits while
San Diego ended up with 4.
Fernandez(5-2) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 and 2/3 innings. Andy
Hawkins(3-4) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and
4 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Fernandez - except San Diego.
Dick Williams lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our
guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes
it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

Atlee Hammaker allowed Jim Davenport to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and Chili Davis had 2 base hits at VETERANS STADIUM where the San
Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 7 to 1.
San Francisco came up with 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning with the help
of 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Dan Gladden who deflated the spirits of
the home town crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 2nd of the season).
The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
Hammaker(4-3) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Shane Rawley(4-3)
was the loser. 'After the stretch we have been through lately, this victory
is especially sweet' offered Jim Davenport. Now, we just have to make this
the norm - not the exception!'

Mike Scott was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates 10 to 1.
Craig Reynolds had a big day with his bat. He stroked a single which scored a
run in the 2nd inning, smacked a one-base hit scoring two baserunners in the
6th inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 1st of the season) in the 9th
inning. Houston had a total of 16 hits for the game.
The winning pitcher was Scott(3-2) who allowed 1 run for the game. Lee
Tunnell(3-2) suffered the loss. By surrending 7 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings
his ERA jumped from 2.50 to 3.70.

John Tudor completed the game without help from the bullpen and catcher
Darrell Porter had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals clobbered
the outmatched Atlanta Braves, 14 to 2.
Atlanta fell behind quickly as the St. Louis offense came through in the first
inning scoring 3 runs using 5 hits. Vince Coleman led off and started the
rally when he singled. Coleman was safe at second on a stolen base. A balk
was called. Two outs later Jack Clark came to the plate and delivered a
one-base hit plating a run. Andy Van Slyke came to the plate and doubled
driving in one more runner. Porter added to the uprising and doubled scoring
the final run of the inning. That early scoring held up. St. Louis bats
were hot in the 7th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits. St. Louis
finished with 20 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Tudor(5-3) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs. Joe
Johnson(1-1) was given the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 13 hits
and 2 walks in 5 innings.
