Pittsburgh brought 6 runs across the plate in the 6th inning with the help of 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Lee Mazzilli who deflated the crowd as he lined a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Atlanta could not get the win. The victory went to Larry McWilliams(1-4) who went 5 innings, allowing 5 runs. McWilliams got help from Al Holland who earned his 1st save. Rick Mahler(3-4) was charged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. HOUSTON AT CHICAGO Astros.......... 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 6 0 - 9 16 0 Cubs............ 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 5 0 Win:Knepper(3-4) Loss:Fontenot(3-3) Homeruns- G.Davis-2(9th), M.Bailey(2nd), D.Thon(4th) Glenn Davis ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD where the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs by the score of 9 to 1. Davis had a good day at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning, blasted a solo shot (his 9th of the season) in the 8th inning and banged out a single which scored a run in the 8th inning. Chicago was out-hit by Houston, 16 hits to 5. Bob Knepper(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing 1 run. Ray Fontenot(3-3) was hit with the loss. He allowed 4 homeruns in 7 and 1/3 innings of work. Houston now has a record of 18-22. With the loss, the Chicago ballclub's record is 18-20. ST. St. Louis set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Vince Coleman led off and started the attack as he slapped a one-base hit. Coleman was safe at second on a stolen base. Tommy Herr then was hit by a pitch. Willie McGee was up next and he lined a single to load the bases. Jack Clark followed, but he was set down on strikes. Andy Van Slyke continued the rally and hit a deep fly resulting in a run. Terry Pendleton stepped up to the plate and he lined a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Both teams ended up with 10 on the afternoon. Ken Dayley(2-0) went 4 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Ricky Horton recorded his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Mario Soto(3-4). He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits and 5 walks. SAN FRANCISCO AT MONTREAL Giants.......... 0 3 0 0 0 1 0 0 4 - 8 13 1 Expos........... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 2 9 1 Win:Gott(3-3) Loss:Hesketh(5-1) Save:Davis(11th) Alex Trevino had 4 hits and 2 RBI at OLYMPIC STADIUM as the San Francisco Giants beat the Montreal Expos 8 to 2. Jim Gott(3-3) had a solid outing for San Francisco. He was reached for 4 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. San Francisco ended up with 13 hits for the game while Montreal had 9. Mark Davis was credited with his 11th save. Joe Hesketh(5-1) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings. LOS ANGELES AT NEW YORK Dodgers......... 0 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 3 5 1 Mets............ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 3 0 Win:Hershiser(2-1) Loss:Darling(2-3) Homeruns- G.Brock(7th) Orel Hershiser held New York scoreless on just 3 hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Mets 3 to 0 at SHEA STADIUM. Hershiser(2-1) was simply too much for the New York batters. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.84. Los Angeles took care of New York with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. Ron Darling(2-3) ended up with the loss. He struck out 10 batters in 7 and 2/3 innings despite losing the game. SAN DIEGO AT PHILADELPHIA Padres.......... 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 - 4 11 0 Phillies........ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 3 2 Win:Hoyt(4-2) Loss:Hudson(1-4) Lamarr Hoyt blanked Philadelphia allowing just 3 hits as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 0. Hoyt(4-2) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Philadelphia hitters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.25 to 4.20. San Diego finished with 11 hits in the victory. Charles Hudson(1-4) was given the loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks. 'Hoyt gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Dick Williams said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
