2019 ESSZ Senior Short Course Sectionals - RESULTS

This was a very disappointing meet. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting huge drops, especially with his stroke being off, but I was hopeful that Bear might get a personal best or two. However, not only did he not get a PB, but he added significant time in his distance events. Making matters worse - we found out that he's been dealing with cramping/muscle spasm issues for 2 years now! This is heartbreaking because with him getting bigger and stronger his times should be improving, but now I learn that every distance race he competes in (and some sprints), he cramps up in the shoulders, back, and hips, and he fights through the pain to compete. In fact, these cramps were apparently the catalyst of the stroke issues, as he adjusted his stroke to make it less painful.

The information about the cramping was told to Coach Andy years ago, but Andy felt the issue was mental and that Bear was tightening up because he was trying to hard, and he urged him to swim more relaxed. At this point however, it seems pretty obvious there is something else going on. We are going to look into options to try and determine the underlying problem.
