The Baltimore Orioles scored 7 runs for the win. Baltimore drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 4 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Baltimore had 9 hits overall, while Oakland had 6. Steve McCatty(1-6) suffered the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. TEXAS AT BOSTON Rangers......... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 4 0 Red Sox......... 3 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 - 6 13 0 Win:Clemens(7-0) Loss:Noles(2-4) Homeruns- G.Ward(4th) Roger Clemens reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts and Tony Armas had 2 base hits at FENWAY PARK as the blistering-hot Boston Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers by the count of 6 to 1. Clemens(7-0) escaped virtually unscathed against the Texas hitters. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Boston had 13 hits for the afternoon. Dickie Noles(2-4) absorbed the loss. 'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Bobby Valentine said. Clemens pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.' KANSAS CITY AT CHICAGO Royals.......... 0 4 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 6 11 1 White Sox....... 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 3 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 7 18 5 Win:Wehrmeister(1-1) Loss:Jones(2-2) Homeruns- D.Motley(9th), C.Fisk(7th) Carlton Fisk blasted a homerun and had 5 RBI at COMISKEY PARK where the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals in 16 innings by the score of 7 to 6. The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Chicago was victorious in the 16th inning. Harold Baines slapped a single. Mike Jones then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch. Greg Walker then drew a walk. Fisk followed and he doubled making Chicago victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Overall Chicago out-hit Kansas City 18 to 11. Dave Wehrmeister(1-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Jones(2-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 4 innings giving up 5 hits and 5 walks. CALIFORNIA AT DETROIT Angels.......... 0 0 7 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 9 7 1 Tigers.......... 0 1 1 2 1 0 0 2 0 - 7 12 2 Win:Slaton(3-3) Loss:Berenguer(1-3) Save:Moore(8th) Homeruns- B.Grich(5th), L.Parrish-2(9th) Shortstop Craig Gerber had 3 base hits as the California Angels beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9 to 7. California brought 7 runs across the plate in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Bobby Grich who quieted the home crowd when he depressed the partisan hometown fans with a grand slam home run (his 5th of the season). Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for Detroit to come away with the victory. Jim Slaton(3-3) allowed 7 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Slaton got help from Donnie Moore who earned his 8th save. Juan Berenguer(1-3) was given the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Gene Mauch said after the game. 'Slaton did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!' MILWAUKEE AT MINNESOTA Brewers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 1 - 3 14 1 Twins........... 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 1 - 4 9 0 Win:Davis(1-2) Loss:Cocanower(2-5) Homeruns- R.Smalley(10th), T.Brunansky(6th), M.Salas(4th) Mark Salas cracked a homer as the Minnesota Twins won at METRODOME in dramatic fashion over the Milwaukee Brewers, the final score, 4 to 3. The game was won by Minnesota with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Tim Teufel drew a walk. Salas stepped up to the plate and he lined a base-hit. Ron Washington was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Kirby Puckett came up and he slapped a one-base hit giving Minnesota the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Minnesota won despite being out-hit by Milwaukee 14 hits to 9. Ron Davis(1-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Jaime Cocanower(2-5) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 3 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks. SEATTLE AT NEW YORK Mariners........ 0 0 2 1 1 0 0 0 3 - 7 15 0 Yankees......... 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 2 - 6 11 2 Win:Nunez(1-3) Loss:Bordi(4-3) Save:Thomas(7th) Al Cowens hit 2 doubles as the Seattle Mariners staged a dramatic comeback over the New York Yankees by a score of 7 to 6 at YANKEE STADIUM. Seattle had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. Cowens led off and started the rally when he doubled. Dave Henderson was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Spike Owen then was walked intentionally. Bob Kearney stepped in and he doubled, and an error was also committed, bringing in two baserunners. Jack Perconte stepped into the box and banged out a single scoring the final run of the inning. Seattle out-hit New York for the game, 15 hits to 11. The winning pitcher was Edwin Nunez(1-3) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings. Nunez got help from Roy Thomas who was credited with his 7th save. Rich Bordi(4-3) was the loser in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings. CLEVELAND AT TORONTO Indians......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 9 1 Blue Jays....... 0 2 0 2 0 0 0 0 - 4 10 1 Win:Key(5-2) Loss:Ruhle(3-4) Homeruns- D.Garcia(5th) Jimmy Key tossed a shutout at EXHIBITION STADIUM as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 4 to 0. Key(5-2) gave Toronto a solid outing. He gave up just 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.02. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. The loss was charged to Vern Ruhle(3-4). He surrendered 4 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings. CLEVELAND AT TORONTO Indians......... 0 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 3 8 2 Blue Jays....... 0 0 5 1 0 0 0 0 - 6 12 1 Win:Leal(5-1) Loss:Smith(3-3) Save:Henke(12th) Homeruns- T.Bernazard(6th), L.Moseby(5th) George Bell had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the strong Toronto Blue Jays outscored the Cleveland Indians 6 to 3. Toronto tallied 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they had 5 base hits. That early scoring held up. Toronto had 12 hits for the afternoon while Cleveland had 8. The win went to Luis Leal(5-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Tom Henke earned his 12th save. Roy Smith(3-3) took the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
