I thought below article was interesting. I have to do more research here.

If there is GPS functionality (and basic text, email), I would consider one for my multi-day hikes. The old Motorola Razor flip phone was about 3.5 ounces. My iPhone 12 Pro Max is 8 ounces. I only get consistent T-Mobile at mountain peaks anyway and don't really need the majority of the smartphone stuff.
