Yes I know, as I said, I recently re-read that particular passage. One I knew from the description was Varys, but I couldn't remember who he was talking to, even with the description (oddly I could remember knowing at one time). I had literally been talking with someone two weeks ago about having re-read that passage and not remembering/re-figuring out who his partner in that scene was. Seeing it on the show jogged my memory.

On the one hand, I agree it makes some things arguably fit "better," but I attributed all of that to Renly's success as a charismatic leader and his far-reaching influence. Given his description in the book, I don't think it's too far-fetched.
