1974 Spring Valley League Season Recap

At the midway point of the season Newtown seemed primed to take their first ever PA Divsion title, but Doylestown, bolstered by a 9 game win streak, blazed into first place and never looked back, winning the PA Division by 2 games over New Hope while Newtown free fell from first place to a 18-24 record and a last place finish. Doylestowns lineup, while not as potent as in recent years, featured 4 players who hit at least 6 home runs, SS Chris Hamylton, 3B Brad Heath who also hit .331 to lead the team, and corner outfielders Kevin Floyd and Brian Oddo. Doylestowns pitching was the dominant force behind their division crown this year as Dennys Ojeda (2.57), Orlando Jeopoldo (3.56) and Grant Krueger (2.26) combined to win 20 games between them.

On the NJ side of the river, Stockton raced out and never looked back, winning the division handily. The Saints were paced by 2B Joey Gabel, CF Tom Larkin, 3B Ty Baker and SS Craig Dinsmore, who all hit over .300. RF Jamie Ford would add 10 homers and 28 RBI. On the mound James Grace would throw 75 innings of 3.00 ERA ball and he and Rob Usher combined for 11 wins.

Doylestown would take the first game of the championship series and seemed poised to finally win their first title, but Stockton would rally to win the next two games and claim the title.
