Steve Victory JOURNAL – Preseason 2015-16

Coach Steve Victory has players wearing nametags for the first few weeks of practice leading up to the 2015-16 season. Even he forgets names once and awhile, welcoming an amazing eight new players to the squad. Six graduated after the NCT heartbreak of March 2015 and two more guys, heralded junior Michael Bliss and Brett Fischer opted to try for the NBA draft (Bliss was picked #12 by the Pacers; Fischer wasn’t picked at all).

Here are the five players coming back:
C Craig King (senior): will this be his year to finally break out?
SF Travis Williams (senior): he did break out last year thanks to all the injuries to others, averaging 14 ppg
SG Cliff McWilliams (junior): up and down player
C Jordie Barnes (sophomore): should be a starter now that Brody Adams has graduated
PG Will Turner (sophomore): Alaska native will redshirt this year with all the PG talent coming in.

Here are the new guys – some look solid; a few are questions marks:
PF Travis McQuay: snagged him from NJ, possible starter or early off the bench
PF Alex Henry: best guy of the bunch it looks like, will start
PG Mark Bell: The Gadsden, Alabama product ready to run the show as a frosh
PG Michael Slater: looks ready to bump McWilliams to the bench
PF Alex Henry: Just another guy?
SG Marco Bartow: good potential, watch for him in a year or two
SF Traves Pearce: not as much potential but decent ratings
PF Ben Field: ye olde waste of space (the next Craig King but with crappy grades?)

Alabama’s prestige keeps on an upward trend but barely – rising to 45
The team’s freshman class is ranked “good” and the overall talent is listed as “solid.” Game challenge – normal. Expectations – win a few games. Wow, the ‘Bama administration wouldn’t say that to the football coaches.

The Tide will again begin its season in a national tournament. Victory and crew will head to Madison Square Garden for the Preseason ACT – the site where ‘Bama lost in the ACT finals to Arkansas two years prior.

“I’ve got three more years before the 15-year deadline,” Victory reminds himself. “A lot is riding on this class of freshmen...”
