GAME 61 - June 4 - Radio Broadcast

I see by the clock that we're
ready to go here in FOFC
Morgan steps in to start things
off for NL Post WWII
Let's set the FOFC defense for you
Battery mates are Nielsen and Bullock
Covering the corners at first and third
Will be Potpie and Palmer
The keystone combo has Treacy at second
And Nights playing short
In the outfield
From left to right
Its Gunner, Tucker and Pflaggstettler
Now Morgan steps into the batter's box
This game's about to begin
Morgan finishes his stretching
Let's play some ball...
The lefthander delivers
Morgan swings and misses
STRIKE THREE!
Nielsen strikes out Joe Morgan
So one up and one gone

Coming up for NL Post WWII is Pete Rose
Nobody on base, one out
Rob Nielsen steps off the
mound toward second
Gives the resin bag a toss
Now he toes the rubber...
He's ready to go
Nielsen is into his windup
Here's the pitch
Curveball, inside corner, low...
Swung on...
And lined to left for a base hit
No chance to get that one

Rose takes a walking lead
Rose has stolen 2 of 3 bases this year
Nielsen flicks one underhand to first...
Rose scrambles back in time

Mays is up next
One gone, top of the 1st
Hank Aaron moves out on deck
Willie will be facing the
left-handed Nielsen
from the right side of the plate
He has a .290 average overall
But southpaws are his nemesis...
He has only a .243 average
against lefty hurlers
Waiting for the pitch is Mays
Nielsen goes into his stretch...
Looks at Rose...
He fires one to Potpie...
Rose dives back in
That's his best move to first...
Potpie lobs it back
Now Nielsen comes home
Swung on and missed by Mays,
he's down on strikes
Two down
Bullock asks for a new ball
He calls time and trots out to the mound
A conference going on between
Bullock and Nielsen

So with 1 on and 2 outs
the Post-Nationals send
their left fielder,
Hank Aaron, up to face Nielsen
Good-hitting Stan Musial is waiting
in the on-deck circle
Aaron grips the bat handle
Aaron awaits the delivery
Here's the 1-2 offering
Aaron swings on a ball in on his fists
It results in a pop up to short
Nights is under it...
A few steps to his right...
One hands it for the out
Aaron looked bad on that pitch
That's three outs here in
the top of the first
At the end of one half inning,
for NL Post WWII
No runs, one hit, no errors
and one man left on base
FOFC is coming to bat

NL Post WWII has taken the field
here in the bottom of the first...
Here's the way they look, defensively

for the All Stars
Gibson brings it home
Sinker, at the knees...

Tucker hits it into the hole
on the right side
Morgan ranging to his left...

Throws on the run...
And Tucker is out by a step at first
And there's one away

Here's Jeff Nights
Nights wiggles the bat above his head
He's ready for the delivery
Gibson brings it to the plate
Nights rips one to center
He hit it right on the nose...
Mays is off to the races...
He is coming fast...
He dives...

OUT!
Nice play by Willie Mays

Persimmon Pflaggstettler
is coming to the plate
Pflaggstettler digs in on the right side
of the plate facing the righty Gibson
Gibson wastes no time
He has the sign from Bench
Gibson kicks and fires
It's a smash over short
Banks leaps
Just over his outstretched glove
Pflaggstettler makes a wide turn at first
He will hold at first
The ball comes in quickly

Potpie heads to the plate for FOFC
The infield is at regular depth
Potpie is trying to get comfortable
in the box
Digging that back foot in
Gibson adjusts his belt...
Looks in for the sign from Bench
Bob rocks and fires
That's ball four
Potpie will trot down to first
Pflaggstettler is now down on second

way to home plate

At the end of one inning,...
FOFC on top 1 to 0

Musial will come up to lead
off the top of the 2nd
Musial has 9 doubles this year
Now set, Musial waits for the pitch
The count is full
And the pay-off pitch...
There's a line drive in the gap by Musial
That looks like an easy two-bagger
A. J. Tucker races to the
ball and fires it in
Musial has himself a double

Now here's Clemente
Nielsen has the sign from Bullock
The southpaw Nielsen's delivery
It's hit high and deep
Stan Gunner giving chase
This one is deep!
IT MIGHT BE . . .
IT IS! A HOMERUN!
That is Roberto Clemente's 11th
home run of the year.

NL Post WWII shortstop, Ernie
Banks, will be up next
He will be followed by Johnny Bench
Bases empty... no one out
NL Post WWII up by 1
Banks swinging from the right side
of the plate against the lefty Nielsen
The count two balls,
two strikes on Banks
The pitch is on the way
Banks tries to hold up
Bullock points down at the
first base umpire

STRIKE THREE!
With one down, up next is Johnny Bench
To be followed by Bob Gibson

That brings up Johnny Bench, the catcher
The outfield shades towards left for Bench
Nielsen studies his sign
Nielsen fires
He misses outside
Ball four

Walking up to the plate now is Gibson
Joe Morgan waits on deck
Gibson goes through his routine
of settling in
Gibson waits patiently for the pitch
His bat is coiled
Nielsen checks Bench on first...
The 2 strike delivery
Fastball, a dandy...
Steee Rike THREE!
And Gibson is punched out
Two down

Making his way up is Morgan
Morgan digs in on the left side
of the plate facing the lefty Nielsen
Bullock flashes the sign to Nielsen
The pitch to Morgan...
Drilled on the ground to second
Treacy comes up with it
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 4-3
That retires the side...
2 runs cross the plate for NL Post WWII
After 1 and a half innings, NL
Post WWII on top 2 to 1

Palmer saunters to the plate...
He stretches out a little
Then kicks the dirt from his spikes...

Now he steps into the batter's box
Palmer a righty in the batter's box
facing the righthanded Gibson
Palmer gets set for the pitch
Now Bob delivers
There's a fly ball to Willie Mays
Mays circles under it...
He makes the play
One up, one down for FOFC

At the plate now for FOFC is Treacy
Gibson is rubbing the ball up
Now the umpire wants to take a look
No problems found...
Now Gibson gets the sign from Bench
Now ready, here it is...

Under it is Bench...and he's got it
Two down
Gibson retires two in a row

Nielsen moseys up to the plate

The lefthander Nielsen delivers
Mays rolls one toward Sean Treacy
He scoops it and fires to first...
Close play

The first base coach throws his hands up
in disbelief
That's one away

So with 1 on and 1 out

Hank Aaron, up to face Nielsen
Hard-hitting Stan Musial is walking
towards the on-deck circle
We'll see how they pitch to Aaron

Pflaggstettler scuffs up the
lines around the box
Pflaggstettler waits for the delivery
He brings it home
Breaking ball...
It darts down and out
as Pflaggstettler swings way over it
He was fooled completely
Bench loses it momentarily,
but now finds the handle and tags
Persimmon as he was heading for the dugout

He was 2 for 4 with a homerun
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

Note: if there is a confusing section in the above text, like a repeated portion...during the game the Post-nationals elected to do a double steal. I thought I had hit the wrong button and didn't want to penalize them by having them run a play the were not going to run on their own. So I undid the play, but when I rolled (clicked) for the batter to swing they ran the double steal again...hence the duplicate information
