The 2003 Draft: This Time It Counts!

Well, the Bears were apparently inspired by our successful vote on the move. They attempted to move to South Dakota, but the fine people of Sioux Falls (both of them) rejected them. Learn from the masters, boys!

For the first draft that actually mattered in our short history, we had possession of the first pick overall. After careful analysis, we didn't see anyone on the board worthy of that pick, so instead we traded down for the Bear's 1st(11th overall) and 2nd round picks.

Our approach for the draft was to start building the offensive line first, so by the time we get a franchise quarterback in a few years, he will have a solid line to protect him. To this end, we hoped to take Clyde Hare, a 6'7", 298 pound guard with potentials of 95 run blocking and 100 for pass blocking. By trading to the Bears pick, we gambled, hoping that we could still get our man at the 11th spot and pick up an extra 2nd round pick. Unfortunately, Hare was taken by Cincinnati at pick 6, and so we made Junior Adams, a 6'8" 286 pound tackle out of Southern Mississippi, the first meaningful pick in the new era of our team. In the second round, we chose quarterback Ralph Porter, a 6'6" 225 pounder who likes to scramble.

Here is our entire draft summary:

Rd Player Pos. College
1 Junior Adams T Southern Miss.
2 Ralph Porter QB Texas A&M
2 Harvey Kegley RB Iowa State
2 Tracy Long C Stanford
3 Kenneth Jacobs RB Auburn
3 Jimmie Willis G Northwestern
4 J.T. Kearse FB Robert Morris
5 Albert Cartwright QB Missouri
6 Perry Bishop DT Texas-El Paso
7 Spencer Bell WR Southern Methodist

Hopefully we have taken our first step towards a bright future, and not misstepped. The team must be ready to take on Dallas the season that we move to Waco!
