Brett

200 IM - Seed time 3:00.71 – As expected the improved strokes and stamina results in a dramatic improvement. Brett swam a 2:56.92 for a 4 second drop. He was still off in his Breaststroke leg, probably because he is tired and is needed to rest a bit at that point. Once he gets that part under control, I’ll expect a couple of second drop on that leg alone.

100 Back - Seed time 1:24.03 – After the 500 Free the night before, Brett had a good bit of confidence. He really worked harder in this event and ended up improving by almost a full second 1:23.17.

100 Free - Seed Time 1:11.85 – Ok, interesting story around this one. Brett wasn’t aware that he was schedule to swim this event. After he finished the 100 Back, he thought he was only going to have to do the 1000. When he found out about this race, he wasn’t happy. I think it’s because he was nervous about the 1000…regardless, when he dove in, he might as well have been swimming a 1000. He posted a very poor time of 1:16.40…the coach said to him, “looked like you didn’t want to swim that race.” His response, “I didn’t” – so coach told him not to worry about it and to get ready for the 1000.

1000 Free - NT – I was very proud of Brett’s 1000 free. He ended up swimming it in a senior’s event rather than an open event. Meaning Brett had to swim against 17 and 18 year olds. In fact, the bell for the final lap rang and Brett was only on lap 27 out of 40…but he finished up strong with a time of 14:03.24 (splits below)

100 Fly - Seed time 1:31.56 – This was another race Brett really attacked. His fly is better mostly because he is working harder and especially kicking harder, but he still need to work on foot position and relaxing the legs to create a better snap on the kick. However, the effort in practice and the confidence resulted in a 1.5 second drop to 1:29.94

200 Free - Seed time 2:34.09 -Another case where after swimming the 500 Free on Thursday, the thought of 200 seemed like no big deal. He really went out much harder...he told me prior to the race he wanted to swim a 2:30.00 he ended up swimming a 2:29.65...

50 Free - Seed time 34.21 – Brett did better, not as well as I had hoped but an improvement of about .3 with a time of 33.92

50 Breast - 39.50, State Cut 39.29 – Fatigue really seemed to catch up to Brett in this one (Brett and everybody else as all the times were slower than the seed times). Brett finished just a quarter of second off his personal best with a 39.74. The coach did notice something he’s told Brett to work on in practice…it has something to do with hand position in the recovery phase before the streamline part of the stroke.

500 Free - NT – Brett did a nice job. As expected he was very conservative in his approach. He finished with a time of 6:52.84. He was pretty pumped up after the race and stated that it wasn’t that bad and he wasn’t all that tired. I expect a pretty significant drop the next time he does this event.

Thought it might be interesting to look at Brett’s splits in the 500 and both halves of the 1000 next to each other. It gives you a good indication of why I said his stroke is pretty good for distances…

Code:
500 FREE 1000 Opening 1000 Closing 38.88 38.91 41.81 42.25 42.98 42.59 42.47 44.07 43.34 42.89 44.30 42.26 41.73 43.60 42.21 41.85 43.13 44.79 41.84 42.68 40.85 41.49 42.33 41.06 40.37 43.33 40.82 39.07 42.50 39.12 6:52.84 7:07.39 6:55.85

Clearly Brett conserved a bunch in the opening 500 for the 1000 free, as he managed a significant negative split. In fact, I find it fascinating that the back half times are very similar to the 500 he swam the night before. If not for the 1 slow 50 where he posted a 44.79, they might be almost identical. Obviously this means he can go harder in the 500, but it also means he can go harder in the opening 500 of the 1000 as well. I’m going to be interested to watch how he handles distance frees moving forward…
