Winfield had a big day with his bat. He lashed a single in the 1st inning, bombed a two-run dinger (his 6th of the season) in the 3rd inning, doubled which scored a run in the 7th inning and singled scoring a run in the 8th inning. New York had a total of 14 hits for the game. Cowley(4-2) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Kirk McCaskill(2-4) was the losing pitcher. New York scored big getting 7 runs off him in 6 innings. The Texas Rangers snapped a 5 game losing streak and topped the Chicago White Sox by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5. The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Texas won it in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Gary Ward was the sparkplug when he laced a base-knock. Steve Buechele was next and he delivered a single. Buechele took second on the throw. Curtis Wilkerson then tripled plating two runs. Tommy Dunbar followed and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. Texas finished with 12 hits while Chicago ended up with 9. The win was credited to Dave Stewart(1-0) who went 5 innings allowing 2 runs. Dave Wehrmeister(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. When questioned, Bobby Valentine remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win period!' Boston won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Wade Boggs started the attack as he lined a base-hit. One out later, Tony Armas came up and he blasted a two-run home run (his 6th of the season). The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Mark Clear(4-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Keith Creel(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 2 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk. Milwaukee had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Paul Molitor who brought a roar from the partisan COUNTY STADIUM fans when he laced a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Milwaukee had 14 hits overall, while Kansas City had 10. Jaime Cocanower(1-2) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. Dan Quisenberry(0-3) was the loser in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Molitor said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.' Minnesota erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Tom Brunansky initiated the scoring spurt when he laced a single. After another out, Dave Engle came to the plate and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 2nd of the season). Minnesota took care of Toronto with no trouble in the 9th. The win went to Blyleven(6-2) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Jimmy Key(3-2) took the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 7 and 2/3 innings. DETROIT AT OAKLAND Tigers.......... 0 0 5 0 0 0 1 0 1 - 7 7 0 A's............. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 5 1 Win:Petry(4-2) Loss:John(1-2) Homeruns- D.Evans(9th), C.Lemon(4th), B.Garbey(3rd) Dan Petry delivered 9 solid innings at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Detroit Tigers beat the struggling Oakland A's by the count of 7 to 0. Detroit brought 5 runs across the plate in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 4 hits. That early scoring held up. Detroit managed 7 in their victory. Petry(4-2) was credited with the shutout. Tommy John(1-2) ended up with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. 'He had his 'A' game today,' Sparky Anderson said of Petry. 'Very impressive performance.' BALTIMORE AT SEATTLE Orioles......... 0 0 0 0 4 1 0 0 0 - 5 6 1 Mariners........ 0 0 4 1 2 0 1 1 - 9 11 0 Win:Swift(1-4) Loss:McGregor(3-3) Save:Thomas(3rd) Homeruns- F.Rayford(6th), A.Davis(7th), S.Owen(2nd) First baseman Alvin Davis hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI and Roy Thomas went 4 strong innings at The Kingdome where the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 9 to 5. In the 3rd inning Seattle scored 4 runs when they had 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Davis who made the crowd come alive when he belted a three-run homer (his 7th of the season). Seattle had 11 hits for the afternoon while Baltimore had 6. The win went to Bill Swift(1-4) who allowed 4 runs in 5 innings. Swift got relief help from Thomas who gained credit for his 3rd save. Scott McGregor(3-3) was given the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. The win by Seattle was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. Now their seasonal record improves to 14-21. The loss by Baltimore interrupted a nice 8-2 recent run.
