Third baseman Paul Zuvella had 2 base hits at FULTON CTY STADIUM as the
Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 3 to 1.
Chicago was unable to recover after Atlanta went ahead in the bottom of the
4th inning scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits. Chicago could do no
damage in the 9th.
Zane Smith(3-3) allowed 1 run in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Terry
Forster recorded his 2nd save. Ray Fontenot(3-2) was hit with the loss.

In a game for the baseball purist, Bob Forsch(3-2) and Bob Knepper(2-4)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, St. Louis Cardinals finally emerged
victorious over Houston Astros, 2 to 1.
St. Louis came up with 1 run in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits.
That would hold up as the winning run. Houston had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.
Forsch was helped out by Ricky Horton who recorded his 2nd save. 'We won
because we did the little things right.' Whitey Herzog said after the game.
'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in
close games we don't make mistakes.'
SAN DIEGO AT MONTREAL

David Palmer pitched a complete game at OLYMPIC STADIUM where the Montreal
Expos beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 7 to 2.
Montreal had 4 runs cross the plate in the 4th inning with the help of 6 hits.
It was enough to earn the victory. Montreal banged out 9 on the afternoon.
The victory went to Palmer(2-2) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Lamarr
Hoyt(3-2) was charged with the loss. He pitched 4 innings allowing 6 hits
and 1 walk.

At SHEA STADIUM the New York Mets outscored the San Francisco Giants 6 to
3.
Ron Darling(2-2) pitched a solid game. He allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in 8 and
1/3 innings. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Jesse Orosco recorded the save, his 4th. Jim Gott(2-2) absorbed the loss.
With the win, New York continued their winning ways; their streak now stands
at 6 games and counting.

It was a great finish at VETERANS STADIUM as the Philadelphia Phillies pulled
off a dramatic comeback beating the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 5 to
4.
Philadelphia came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs.
Juan Samuel kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Von Hayes was next to
the plate, but was promptly struck out. Mike Schmidt then tripled bringing
in a run. After another out, Alan Knicely came up and he was walked
intentionally. Tom Foley stepped into the box and reached on an error giving
Philadelphia the victory and sending the 35,660 home-town fans home happy.
Philadelphia rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Dave Rucker(1-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The
loss was charged to Ken Howell(1-1) in relief. Rucker and Foley were really
whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As
John Felske noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's
attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys
- it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Mario Soto had a strong outing as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh
Pirates by a score of 5 to 0 at THREE RIVERS STADIUM.
Cincinnati scored 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits.
That scoring would be all that was needed. Cincinnati totaled 10 on the
afternoon.
Soto(3-3) went the distance for the shutout. The losing pitcher was Larry
McWilliams(0-4). 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said
Soto. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure
and everything went well.'
