The deciding run was scored by California in the 9th. After an out was recorded, Doug Decinces delivered a single. Grich followed and he delivered a base-hit. Grich took second on the throw. Ruppert Jones then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Dick Schofield came up and he laced a single making California victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. California had 7 hits for the afternoon. Rafael Lugo(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Nate Snell(0-3) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings. With this win, California has a 18-22 record. They have been 3-7 lately. Baltimore has a record of 24-15 after the loss. The Toronto Blue Jays won by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. The score was tied at 3 after nine. Toronto won it in the 10th inning. The critical plate appearance was by George Bell who deflated the crowd as he delivered a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Despite losing, Cleveland out-hit Toronto 14 to 10. The victory was credited to Jim Acker(2-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs. Keith Creel(1-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. CHICAGO AT KANSAS CITY White Sox....... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 0 Royals.......... 0 1 3 0 0 1 0 0 - 5 7 1 Win:Leibrandt(1-4) Loss:Bannister(1-5) Homeruns- G.Brett(4th), D.Motley-2(5th) Left fielder Darryl Motley cracked 2 homeruns and Charlie Leibrandt pitched 9 strong innings as the Kansas City Royals topped the Chicago White Sox by a score of 5 to 1 at ROYALS STADIUM. Kansas City came up with 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Willie Wilson got things going when he laced a single. Lynn Jones was next and he drew a walk. George Brett then smacked a three-run homer (his 4th of the season). That early scoring held up. Kansas City rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon. Leibrandt(1-4) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Floyd Bannister(1-5) was tagged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings. Tony LaRussa was obviously impressed with the pitching of Leibrandt, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.' MINNESOTA AT MILWAUKEE Twins........... 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 - 1 7 0 Brewers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 1 0 Win:Blyleven(7-2) Loss:Haas(1-5) Homeruns- T.Teufel(8th) Bert Blyleven was on top of his game, blanking Milwaukee on just 1 hit at COUNTY STADIUM as the Minnesota Twins beat the Milwaukee Brewers by the count of 1 to 0. Blyleven(7-2) was tremendous on the mound for Minnesota. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 2.05 to 1.83. Minnesota managed 7 in their victory. The loss was charged to Moose Haas(1-5). 'All of my pitches were working today,' Blyleven said. 'I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.' NEW YORK AT OAKLAND Yankees......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 4 1 A's............. 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 - 2 5 0 Win:Codiroli(7-3) Loss:Cowley(4-3) Save:Howell(9th) Homeruns- B.Bochte(4th) In a game for the baseball purist, Chris Codiroli(7-3) and Joe Cowley(4-3) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Oakland A's finally emerged victorious over New York Yankees, 2 to 0. Oakland jumped on top of New York in the 3rd inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Codiroli and Oakland. That was all the run support Codiroli required. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. Jay Howell got the save, his 9th. DETROIT AT SEATTLE Tigers.......... 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 - 3 4 0 Mariners........ 3 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 5 10 0 Win:Swift(2-4) Loss:Petry(4-3) Save:Thomas(4th) Homeruns- D.Evans(10th), G.Thomas(8th), S.Owen(3rd) Phil Bradley had 4 hits as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers by the score of 5 to 3 at The Kingdome. Seattle jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Gorman Thomas who electrified KINGDOME when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 8th of the season). Seattle had 10 hits for the game and Detroit had 4. Bill Swift(2-4) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Swift got relief help from Roy Thomas who gained credit for his 4th save. Dan Petry(4-3) was the loser. BOSTON AT TEXAS Red Sox......... 3 0 2 0 1 0 1 0 0 - 7 12 0 Rangers......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 2 - 3 7 0 Win:Boyd(4-3) Loss:Russell(1-6) Homeruns- M.Easler(6th), R.Gedman(8th) At ARLINGTON STADIUM the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Texas Rangers by the score of 7 to 3. Mike Easler had a big day with his bat. He laced a one-base hit scoring a run in the 1st inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 6th of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled in the 7th inning. Overall Boston out-hit Texas 12 to 7. Oil Can Boyd(4-3) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 5 and 2/3 innings. Jeff Russell(1-6) took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 12 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. The Boston ballclub's record now stands at 27-13. Texas can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.
