Sixto Lezcano had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Atlanta Braves 6 to 5 at FULTON CTY STADIUM.
Obviously without his best stuff, Rick Rhoden(1-7) still hung on to pick up
the win. He gave up 5 runs, 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. Pittsburgh
took care of Atlanta with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.
Cecilio Guante gained credit for his 2nd save. Terry Forster(0-2) was the
loser in relief. 'He gutted it out' Chuck Tanner said of Rhoden. 'I was
very impressed by his tenacity.'

Gary Matthews cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD as the Chicago
Cubs beat the Houston Astros 10 to 9.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Matthews. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home run
in the 7th inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his 5th of the season) in
the 8th inning. The game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5
times.
The winning pitcher was Warren Brusstar(4-2) who allowed 3 runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. The losing pitcher was Dave Smith(0-3) in relief. He allowed 3 runs
and 1 hit in 1 inning.

Andy McGaffigan went 9 strong innings and Dave Parker hit one over the fence
at RIVERFRONT STADIUM where the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals
by the score of 4 to 0.
Cincinnati set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring one runner
using 3 hits. That was all the runs McGaffigan(3-1) needed. Cincinnati
banged out 7 on the afternoon.
Danny Cox(4-3) suffered the loss. Pete Rose was very impressed with his
pitcher, McGaffigan, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon.
It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'

Center fielder Mitch Webster cracked a homer and had 3 RBI and Jeff Reardon
quieted any hopes that San Francisco may have had of a comeback as the
Montreal Expos defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 9 to 5 at
OLYMPIC STADIUM.
David Palmer(3-2) got the win despite looking shaky at times. He gave up 11
hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Palmer racked up 7 strikeouts.
Palmer got help from Reardon who pitched great and earned his 15th save.
Vida Blue(2-4) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering
5 runs in 3 innings.

Dwight Gooden racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts at SHEA STADIUM
where the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6 to 3.
Gooden(6-4) gave New York a solid outing. He went 8 innings allowing 7 hits
and 3 walks. Jesse Orosco relieved and was untouched by Los Angeles as he
recorded the save, his 5th.
Jerry Reuss(3-2) was given the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk in 6
innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Gooden - except Los
Angeles. Tommy Lasorda lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was
keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout
pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were
the visitors!'

Ozzie Virgil connected with a 'big fly' as the Philadelphia Phillies topped
the San Diego Padres in 11 innings by a score of 8 to 5 at VETERANS
STADIUM.
The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Philadelphia was
victorious in the 11th inning. Mike Schmidt started the inning off right
when he singled. After an out was recorded, Virgil stepped in and he drew a
walk. Derrel Thomas then lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his
5th of the season) giving Philadelphia the victory as 30,069 happy fans
celebrated wildly. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead
changed hands 5 times.
The win went to Kent Tekulve(2-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Roy Lee
Jackson(1-5) was the losing pitcher in relief. With this win, Philadelphia
has a 20-20 record. They have been 5-5 lately. San Diego has a record of
20-20 after the loss.
