Bedrosian(4-3) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Pittsburgh hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.36 to 2.93. Atlanta totaled 10 on the afternoon. Rick Reuschel(3-4) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. The Houston Astros eventually emerged as victors over the Chicago Cubs by the score of 2 to 1. Ryan earned his pay with a solid performance for Ryan. He allowed 6 hits and no walks in 7 innings lowering his ERA to 4.01. Houston out-hit Chicago for the game, 9 hits to 6. Dave Smith earned his 9th save. Houston now has a record of 19-23. With the loss Chicago now has a record of 19-21. ST. LOUIS AT CINCINNATI Cardinals....... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 0 Reds............ 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 2 10 0 Win:Franco(5-0) Loss:Campbell(1-4) Homeruns- E.Davis(1st) 42,646 fans were treated to a fine game at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Finally, Cincinnati pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Gary Redus drew a walk. Ron Oester followed and he delivered a single. Oester took second on the throw. Dave Parker then slapped a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for Cincinnati and the 42,646 home town fans in attendance. For the game Cincinnati out-hit St. Louis 10 to 6. The win was credited to John Franco(5-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Bill Campbell(1-4) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk. San Francisco came up with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning when they had 4 base hits. That early scoring was all that Dave Lapoint(4-5) needed. San Francisco rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Scott Garrelts was credited with his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Dan Schatzeder(2-4). He surrendered 6 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 4.05 to 4.94. The score was tied at 3 after nine. Los Angeles came out on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Pedro Guerrero initiated the scoring spurt when he banged out a single. Mike Marshall stepped up next and he singled. Greg Brock then delivered a base-hit bringing in a run. Ken Landreaux was up next and he stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. New York was out-hit by Los Angeles, 12 hits to 7. The win went to Tom Niedenfuer(6-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Ken Howell got the save, his 7th. The loss was charged to Roger McDowell(3-2) in relief. SAN DIEGO AT PHILADELPHIA Padres.......... 0 0 2 3 0 0 0 0 0 - 5 12 1 Phillies........ 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 - 3 9 1 Win:Show(6-3) Loss:Carlton(1-3) Save:Gossage(10th) First baseman Steve Garvey had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the San Diego Padres topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5 to 3 at VETERANS STADIUM. San Diego took the lead for keeps in the top of the 3rd inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Garvey who disappointed the partisan crowd when he delivered a one-base hit plating two runs. San Diego ended up with 12 hits for the game while Philadelphia had 9. Eric Show(6-3) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Goose Gossage gained credit for his 10th save. Steve Carlton(1-3) was hit with the loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 10 hits and 1 walk.
