2018 Postseason
So 11 of our FOFC coached teams are in the postseason, and through all that we had just 1 feature game. Let's take a look at it.
3/18/18- NCAA South Region Second Round- (10) Stanford (Benito Sanchez) vs. (2) Kentucky (Patrick Hutt) -- This one wasn't much of a game, as Kentucky forced 22 Stanford turnovers and held them to 34.6% shooting. They led by 21 at halftime and never looked back, rolling into another Sweet Sixteen.
Final Score: (2) Kentucky- 74, (10) Stanford- 49
Let's take a look at the full postseason report.
Tulsa (Will Brown) -- 22-12, 12-6 American.
3/15/18- NIT South Region Quarterfinal at (4) George Washington (W 55-41).
3/19/18- NIT South Region Semifinal at (1) Buffalo (W 82-81).
3/22/18- NIT South Region Final vs. (2) Georgia State (L 81-73).
Good first season for Coach Brown and the Golden Hurricane, and a good run to the NIT Round of 8. They'll look to build on that next season.
Davidson (Randolph Childress) -- 22-11, 13-5 Atlantic 10.
3/16/18- NCAA South Region First Round vs. (9) Creighton (L 66-59).
The Wildcats see their season end against a pretty solid Creighton team. It was a very good season for Coach Childress, his best one yet.
Kansas (Dave Johnson) -- 26-8, 15-3 Big 12.
3/16/18- NCAA East Region First Round vs. (16) Alcorn State (W 78-55).
3/18/18- NCAA East Region Second Round vs. (9) Georgetown (L 81-55).
Wow! Certainly didn't see that coming from the Jayhawks. They've had some early round meltdowns before, but never been dominated like that. A good first season for Coach Johnson, but there is definitely a sour taste after this game.
Michigan State (Al Mighty) -- 25-9, 13-5 Big Ten.
3/15/18- NCAA South Region First Round vs. (13) North Carolina Central (W 83-73).
3/17/18- NCAA South Region Second Round vs. (5) Louisiana Tech (W 100-94).
3/22/18- NCAA South Region Semifinal vs. (1) Virginia (L 72-51).
You kind of saw this one coming after the Spartans scraped by their first 2 NCAA Tournament games. This was an underachieving Michigan State team, finishing with a worse record than last season, but getting to the same spot in the postseason.
Northwestern (Ess Vee) -- 22-11, 9-9 Big Ten.
3/15/18- NIT West Region Quarterfinal vs. (5) Old Dominion (W 68-60).
3/17/18- NIT West Region Semifinal at (1) Pepperdine (W 68-49).
3/24/18- NIT West Region Final vs. (7) Oakland (L 66-61).
By all accounts, it was a successful season for the Wildcats, who were expected to finish last in the Big Ten. They have to be disappointed that they let a trip to Madison Square Garden slip away though.
Rice (Charlie Shocker) -- 21-13, 12-6 Conference USA.
3/16/18- NCAA Midwest Region First Round vs. (5) N.C. State (L 59-55).
A gallant effort for the Owls, who darn near pulled the 12-5 upset, but not quite. Still, a heck of a turnaround for Rice, who until this season had never won more than 12 games under Coach Shocker.
Stanford (Benito Sanchez) -- 23-11, 12-6 Pac 12.
3/16/18- NCAA South Region First Round vs. (7) Illinois (W 66-45).
3/18/18- NCAA South Region Second Round vs. (2) Kentucky- feature game, highlighted above.
Yikes! The Cardinal certainly folded under the pressure against a high powered Kentucky team, but they will absolutely take this after last seasons snub.
UCLA (Tim Shepard) -- 31-5, 16-2 Pac 12.
3/15/18- NCAA West Region First Round vs. (15) Weber State (W 76-64).
3/17/18- NCAA West Region Second Round vs. (7) North Carolina (W 76-68).
3/22/18- NCAA West Region Semifinal vs. (3) Wisconsin (L 65-55).
The Bruins will be happy to get out of the first weekend this season, but they had the potential for so much more. They've slipped just a little bit since their Elite Eight appearance 2 seasons ago.
Alabama (Roy Rogers) -- 19-14, 13-5 SEC.
3/15/18- NIT Midwest Region Quarterfinal vs. (6) Indiana (W 55-54).
3/19/18- NIT Midwest Region Semifinal at (2) UTEP (L 90-66).
Well, the Crimson Tide end their season in a big (but not so good) way after getting hammered at UTEP. This has to be considered a successful season though, as it was the first postseason appearance under the Coach Rogers era.
Florida (Noah Oppenheimer) -- 27-10, 11-7 SEC.
3/16/18- NCAA West Region First Round vs. (12) Belmont (W 74-67).
3/18/18- NCAA West Region Second Round vs. (13) St. Mary's (W 102-95).
3/22/18- NCAA West Region Semifinal vs. (1) Baylor (L 108-69).
Gadzooks! Sweet Sixteen teams, especially #5 seeds, should not be getting beat by 39 points. I'm happy that the Gators survived the first weekend, but after seeing this result, maybe we should wish they hadn't.
Kentucky (Patrick Hutt) -- 30-7, 14-4 SEC.
3/16/18- NCAA South Region First Round vs. (15) Winthrop (W 84-61).
3/18/18- NCAA South Region Second Round vs. (10) Stanford- feature game, highlighted above.
3/22/18- NCAA South Region Semifinal vs. (3) Wichita State (W 73-72).
3/24/18- NCAA South Region Final vs. (1) Virginia (W 73-70).
3/31/18- NCAA Final Four vs. (1W) Baylor (L 84-66).
Congrats to Coach Hutt, who becomes the first FOFC coach in this dynasty to take a team to the NCAA Final Four. Unfortunately, they didn't make the most of their stay, getting blasted. A much better postseason than last season.
So that takes care of the 2018 postseason. I have added a couple columns to the spreadsheets, so I will have to go back through the first 2 seasons to get those numbers. I am hoping there are no mistakes with any of the spreadsheets, but I don't guarantee it. Keeping track of them is something I want to do, but there could be a few mistakes here and there. So when I do send them out and you guys notice something, let me know.
As for the postseason recap and the spreadsheets, I hope to have that done, probably not tomorrow. It'll probably be Tuesday or Wednesday.
