Yeah, I would argue that TV series and movies are different animals, and if you are marketing a 3+ hour story as a movie, I'll try to watch it all at once because that's the medium you are presenting it as.
Generally a 3 hour miniseries will structure things so that each part of the miniseries functions as an episode itself. Splitting a 3 hour movie in thirds or in half tends to not work as well.
