After again seeing these reports of "really improved" I went back to my favorite game reviewer, QuikSand. His comments above were really helpful in me deciding what to do here.
The interaction with the very earnest developer Brooks seems to have been the real insight. I posted the stuff I was trying to manufacture with better settings, expressing my desire to (paraphrasing) "make the game more like managing real football" and his response was akin to "lol good luck with that you nutbag."
