It was a pretty straight forward stage, actually. Cummings is an attacking specialist, Van Avermaet kind of announced his attempt to maintain the yellow jersey (which was always going to involve an attack) and there's nothing strange about Nibali given there's precedent about GC riders that rode well in the Giro to fall flat in the Tour.
Froome's attack yesterday was much more surprising.
