-- Today we find out if we can make two cup finals in the same year!

September 26th, 2016

North America Amateur Cup - Semifinals

Wake Forest Cougars (1st, ACAL) vs Jackson Red Shirts (10th, APL)

Attendance: 300

-- We were in the same league with Jackson for two seasons. In that time we beat them twice at home and lost once on the road. All matches were 1:0 results.

Starting Lineup

GK: Barton
D: Rongen/Pickering/Hernandez/Diaz
M: Tapia/Wilkins
AM: Davidson/Cooper
ST: Goodwin/Cole

We mix things up some here. Standard mindset at home against a weaker team.

1': We try to attack out of the gate, Davidson ahead to Goodwin, a cross to Cole, but they win the cross.

3': Corner for Cooper, taken to Pickering, he gets a header, but wide.

12': A Tapia interception starts our offense, we go down the right, Cooper with a cross, Goodwin is there and volleys it in! 1-0

16': They get one back the same way, a cross down the right and a header. Rongen couldn't keep up. 1-1

17': Throwin in their end, but Wilkins ends up trying a long shot instead of building up on offense.

28': A Rongen interception starts our offense, up to Davidson, quickly to Goodwin, he struggles to control it but eventually does, feeds Cole in the area, clear cut chance, and he finishes! 2-1

29': Jesus. Awful, awful defense. Both our central defenders collapse on a guy like 35 yards out as they start to look forward, allowing a free run from their other striker, its a clear cut chance and a goal. 2-2

36': Goodwin ahead to Cole, he's out pretty far wide right, and can't finish.

HALF: We're supposed to win this, I tell the team they aren't playing good enough. I go out of my way to tell the defense they are costing us this game. They don't react terribly well to that, at least, Barton doesn't. We're outshooting them 7-4, but all their shots are on target.

48': Cooper ahead to Cole, he has a lot of space in front of him, makes a solid run into the area, shoots... saved.

77': We're going to attack, after 30 minutes of no highlights. Glaser is in for Wilkins.

91': We have a throwin in their end but its pretty ugly, a bad shot by Tapia from distance ends up wide.

FULL TIME: Gallardo comes in for a tired Cooper. We outshoot them 14-7 but just no highlights that entire half, frustrating.

97': Diaz is hurt and must come out immediately. Varela is in. That's our last sub.

100': Cole tries a shot from 20 yards out, wide. Coulda gotten something better there.

101': Again... This time Goodwin settles for a long shot he's never going to make.

105': After another long shot that seemed impatient and unnecessary, I add the "work ball into box" instruction.

105': We dodge a bullet, they cross a ball into the area, Barton is there and could ctach it, but instead Pickering heads it, the ball is headed a coupel times, they end up with a shot and a goal, but its a man offsides during the confusion.

HT ET: on to the second half.

106': We see Cole find Gallardo for a really nice shot and goal, but Gallardo was offsides. He was wide open, the defender he needed to stay level with was on the opposite side, he just didn't quite do it.

FULL TIME: We move to penalties.

Both teams convert all 5 penalties.

AFter 10 attempts we're tied at 10.

After 15 attempts we're tied at 15. Yawn.

After our 19th kick, they shoot low and right and Barton dives and stops it!

Wake Forest (19) 2p : 2 (18) Jackson

Goofy ass penalties. They get man of the match on their side.

Goals: Goodwin (7.8), Cole (7.1)
Assists: Goodwin, Cooper (6.7)
Notables: Pickering (7.1), Rongen (7.1)

We were very clearly the better team here, but we gave up two bad goals immediately after each of ours. We shot 19 times but only put 3 on target, settling for way way too many long shots.

But anyway, we are on to the finals!

We're going to play the California Development Academy in the finals. They are an academy team so they're scary, but not as dominant as some of those academy teams from the first couple seasons.

-- We get $59,690 for winning here.
