Lary Sorensen(1-1) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning pitcher. He was reached for 1 hit and no walks in 1/3 of an inning. Chicago had 9 hits for the afternoon. Sorensen was helped out by Lee Smith who recorded his 7th save. Rick Camp(2-5) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 2 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks. ST. Mathis pitched well for Houston in their victory. He went 7 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 2.95 to 2.13. Houston had a total of 7 hits for the game. Mathis got help from Dave Smith who was credited with his 8th save. The Montreal Expos topped the reeling San Diego Padres by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5. The score was tied at 5 after nine. Montreal was victorious in the 10th inning. Tim Raines doubled. Vance Law stepped up next and he doubled making Montreal the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. San Diego had 14 hits in the game while Montreal had 7, but Montreal had the more timely hits. Floyd Youmans(3-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Tim Stoddard(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits without retiring a batter. Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. New York won the game in the 13th inning. Howard Johnson doubled. Len Dykstra next to the plate and he slapped a single resulting in an exciting win for New York and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. New York had 16 hits overall, while San Francisco had 8. Jesse Orosco(1-2) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jim Gott(2-3) took the loss in relief. It was another victory for New York at SHEA STADIUM. Now their winning streak stands at 7 games. The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Philadelphia won it in the 10th inning. John Russell smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 1st of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for Philadelphia and the 30,768 home town fans in attendance. Philadelphia managed only 6 on the afternoon. Kent Tekulve(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Bobby Castillo(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief. By giving up 1 run without retiring a batter his ERA increased from 3.18 to 3.57. The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Cincinnati ended up winning it in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Dave Concepcion keyed the rally when he laced a base-knock. Don Robinson then was wild with a pitch. Diaz then smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season). Cincinnati and Pittsburgh each finished the afternoon with 12 hits. The winning pitcher was John Franco(4-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Ted Power recorded his 7th save. Robinson(1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief.
