In a dramatic ending, the Chicago Cubs staged a comeback win over the
Cincinnati Reds by the count of 7 to 4.
Chicago bats came alive with a big bottom of the 9th inning as they creamed
Cincinnati blasting them with 7 runs on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Billy
Hatcher who made the Chicago fans a happy lot when he emptied the bases with
a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season). Chicago finished with 10 hits
while Cincinnati ended up with 6.
George Frazier(3-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. John
Stuper(1-3) was charged with the loss. Frazier and Thad Bosley were really
whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As
Jim Frey noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.'
Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's
better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Dave Anderson lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and Rick Honeycutt pitched a
complete game shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos by a
score of 2 to 0.
Honeycutt(3-4) looked very much in control throughout the day. He allowed
only 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.97 to 4.09.
Montreal threatened in the 9th but Los Angeles was able to put down the
rally.
Dan Schatzeder(2-3) suffered the loss. Despite losing Buck Rodgers was
optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks
fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go
different, and we come out on top.'
SAN DIEGO AT NEW YORK

Eric Show(5-3) and Dwight Gooden(5-4) treated the New York fans to a fine
pitching duel at SHEA STADIUM. The San Diego Padres eventually emerged as
victors over the New York Mets by the score of 2 to 1.
San Diego scored 2 runs in the 5th inning. New York had a chance to come back
in the 9th but they came up short.
Goose Gossage recorded the save, his 8th.

The Philadelphia Phillies toppled the San Francisco Giants by a 8 to 4 score
at VETERANS STADIUM.
Jerry Koosman(3-1) pitched well for Philadelphia in their victory. He
surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from
4.76 to 4.26. Philadelphia totaled 11 on the afternoon.
Dave Lapoint(3-5) was the losing pitcher. He was unable to control the
Philadelphia offense and allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
With this win, Philadelphia has a 18-18 record. They have been 7-3 lately.
San Francisco has a record of 18-18 after the loss.

12,573 fans were treated to a fine game at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as only one
run separated the combatants at game's end. The Pittsburgh Pirates won by
the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh came out the
victor in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Joe Orsulak drew a
walk. R.J. Reynolds next to the plate and he doubled resulting in a mighty
exciting win for Pittsburgh and the 12,573 home town fans in attendance.
Pittsburgh out-hit Houston for the game, 10 hits to 7.
Don Robinson(2-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Frank Dipino(4-5)
ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit in 1 and 1/3
innings.

In a good matchup it was the St. Louis Cardinals 6, the Atlanta Braves 4 at
BUSCH STADIUM.
St. Louis claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run
utilizing 2 base hits. St. Louis had 9 hits for the afternoon.
Danny Cox(4-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3
runs. Ken Dayley recorded his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Pascual
Perez(0-5).
