Baltimore scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 8th inning with 3 runs on 4 hits. Gary Roenicke led off and started the attack as he lined a single. After an out was recorded, Lee Lacy stepped in and he smacked a single. After another out, Eddie Murray stepped up to the plate and he smacked a three-run homer (his 7th of the season). The California offense proved no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. Sammy Stewart(5-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 3 innings. Donnie Moore(0-4) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings of work. In the 7th inning Toronto scored 3 runs with the help of 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Oliver who helped quiet the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 4th of the season). Toronto finished with 15 hits in the victory. The winning pitcher was Stieb(8-1) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Rich Thompson(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. Kansas City had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Jorge Orta opened up the rally as he reached on an error. Dane Iorg came next and he lined a one-base hit. George Brett then rifled a three-run blast (his 5th of the season) making Kansas City the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Saberhagen(5-4) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Tom Seaver(3-6) was charged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Tony LaRussa said. 'Saberhagen just was too much for our guys.' The score was tied at 3 after nine. Milwaukee came out the victor in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Earnest Riles hit a single. Frank Eufemia then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch. Rick Manning then doubled resulting in an exciting win for Milwaukee and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Milwaukee had 13 hits for the afternoon while Minnesota had 5. The win was credited to Jaime Cocanower(2-3) who went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Eufemia(2-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 3 hits and no walks. The game started off with New York taking the lead in the first scoring 4 runners on 5 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. For the game New York out-hit Oakland 12 to 8. The victory was credited to Dennis Rasmussen(3-1) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs. Steve McCatty(1-5) absorbed the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. The New York ballclub's record now stands at 27-12. With the loss, the Oakland ballclub's record is 19-22. Phelps made sure the Seattle fans enjoyed themselves. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 2nd inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 6th of the season) in the 4th inning. Seattle ended up with 13 hits for the game while Detroit had 9. The victory went to Frank Wills(4-1) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs. Jim Beattie earned his 1st save. Jack Morris(4-2) was tagged with the loss. He was touched for 7 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. BOSTON AT TEXAS Red Sox......... 0 6 0 1 0 0 0 1 8 - 16 17 1 Rangers......... 0 0 1 0 4 0 0 0 0 - 5 9 1 Win:Hurst(5-4) Loss:Hough(4-5) Homeruns- D.Evans(8th), J.Rice(9th), G.Hoffman(4th), T.Harrah(5th) Bruce Hurst mowed down 13 Texas batters as the Boston Red Sox man-handled the Texas Rangers - the final score was 16 to 5. Hurst(5-4) earned his pay with a solid performance for Hurst. He surrendered 9 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.12 to 4.84. Boston bats were very productive in the 2nd inning with 6 runs on 4 hits and the 9th inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 7 hits. Boston totaled 17 on the afternoon. The loss was charged to Charlie Hough(4-5). He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks in 1 and 1/3 innings. Bobby Valentine was impressed with Hurst and his 13 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
