In an exciting finish the Cincinnati Reds pulled out a win over the Chicago
Cubs by a score of 6 to 5 at RIVERFRONT STADIUM.
Cincinnati won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an
out was recorded, Eric Davis drew a walk. Bo Diaz next to the plate and he
doubled giving Cincinnati the victory and sending the 14,529 home-town fans
home happy. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans,
as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
The winning pitcher was John Franco(6-0) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. The loss was charged to Lee Smith(0-2) in relief. He surrendered 3
hits and 2 walks in 1 inning.

Jose Deleon(3-3) and Mike Scott(3-3) treated the Houston fans to a fine
pitching duel at The Astrodome. The Pittsburgh Pirates eventually emerged as
victors over the Houston Astros by the score of 2 to 1.
Deleon was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 5 hits and
3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Deleon whiffed an impressive total of 9
Houston batters lowering his ERA from 2.79 to 2.44. The game was a scoreless
duel until the 6th inning.
Deleon got help from Al Holland who was credited with his 2nd save.

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 6 to 3 at
OLYMPIC STADIUM.
San Francisco had 4 runs cross the plate in the top of the 6th inning with the
help of 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Rob Deer who quieted the
crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 2nd of
the season). San Francisco totaled 11 on the afternoon.
Mike Krukow(4-2) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Mark Davis earned
his 12th save. Bryn Smith(5-2) was charged with the loss.

Fernando Valenzuela(6-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for
Valenzuela. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Los Angeles had
just 5 hits for the afternoon.
Ken Howell recorded the save, his 8th. The losing pitcher was Sid
Fernandez(5-3). His ERA increased from 1.75 to 2.21 as he allowed 5 runs in

Andy Hawkins pitched 8 strong innings as the San Diego Padres defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 2 at VETERANS STADIUM.
San Diego set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 3 runs
on 3 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Hawkins(4-4) and
San Diego. That was all the run support Hawkins required. Neither team
managed to score after the 4th inning.
Roy Lee Jackson got the save, his 2nd. Kevin Gross(3-3) was hit with the
