The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings. California won the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Downing singled. Mike Brown followed and he doubled. Ruppert Jones then laced a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for California and the 45,007 home town fans in attendance. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times. The victory went to Jim Slaton(1-3) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. Bob Gibson(0-4) absorbed the loss in relief. The California ballclub's record now stands at 13-13. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Milwaukee is 1-9 of late and now has an overall record of 3-21, worst in the division. TEXAS AT CLEVELAND Rangers......... 0 0 4 2 0 3 2 1 0 - 12 14 1 Indians......... 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 3 - 8 14 2 Win:Hooton(2-2) Loss:Heaton(0-5) Homeruns- P.O'Brien(1st), S.Buechele(2nd), B.Jacoby(3rd) Pete O'Brien went deep and had 3 RBI as the Texas Rangers defeated the floundering Cleveland Indians by the score of 12 to 8 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. Texas came up with 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by O'Brien who quieted the home crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 1st of the season). Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Burt Hooton(2-2) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Neal Heaton(0-5) was given the loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 3 and 2/3 innings of work. Pat Corrales was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!' CHICAGO AT DETROIT White Sox....... 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 4 1 Tigers.......... 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 - 3 9 1 Win:Morris(3-1) Loss:Seaver(2-3) Save:Hernandez(7th) Homeruns- K.Gibson(4th) Jack Morris(3-1) and Tom Seaver(2-3) treated the Detroit fans to a fine pitching duel at TIGER STADIUM. The Detroit Tigers eventually emerged as victors over the Chicago White Sox by the score of 3 to 1. Morris contributed a very nicely pitched game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings. Morris chalked up 8 strikeouts reducing his ERA from 3.35 to 2.84. Morris got help from Willie Hernandez who pitched great and earned his 7th save. BALTIMORE AT MINNESOTA Orioles......... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 3 9 0 Twins........... 0 2 0 2 1 0 0 1 - 6 8 0 Win:Smithson(4-0) Loss:Davis(2-2) Homeruns- J.Shelby(1st), W.Gross(4th), R.Smalley(4th), T.Teufel(7th) Mike Smithson tossed a complete game as the Minnesota Twins topped the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 6 to 3 at METRODOME. Minnesota took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Tim Teufel who excited the crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the season). Minnesota finished with 8 hits in the victory. Smithson(4-0) allowed 3 runs on the game. Storm Davis(2-2) was the loser. He gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings. BOSTON AT OAKLAND Red Sox......... 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 6 1 A's............. 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 0 - 4 8 1 Win:Codiroli(4-2) Loss:Hurst(2-3) Save:Howell(6th) Homeruns- J.Rice(8th), D.Kingman(6th) In a close game the Oakland A's got by the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4 to 2. In the bottom of the 7th inning Oakland scored 2 runs when they had 3 base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Jay Howell was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 6th save. Chris Codiroli(4-2) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Bruce Hurst(2-3) suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 4 walks. Toronto had 6 runs cross the plate in the 5th inning with the help of 7 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by George Bell who disappointed the partisan crowd when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 7th of the season). Toronto kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings. Luis Leal(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. The loss was charged to Matt Young(2-2). He was touched for 11 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. KANSAS CITY AT NEW YORK Royals.......... 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 9 2 Yankees......... 4 0 0 4 0 3 0 0 - 11 14 0 Win:Cowley(3-2) Loss:Jackson(0-3) Joe Cowley was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals 11 to 2 at YANKEE STADIUM. The game started off with New York taking the lead in the first when they scored 4 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring held up. New York had a total of 14 hits for the game. The victory was credited to Cowley(3-2) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs. The losing pitcher was Danny Jackson(0-3). He surrendered 11 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 5.13 to 7.31.
