Right fielder Claudell Washington hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at FULTON CTY
STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves staged a comeback win over the St. Louis
Cardinals by the count of 6 to 5.
Atlanta won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Rick Cerone led off and he lined a single. After an
out was recorded, Washington stepped in and he smashed a two-run homer (his
3rd of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Atlanta and a wild
post-game celebration by the home town fans. Both teams finished the game
with 11 hits.
Terry Forster(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Jeff Lahti(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.
'What a game!,' Forster said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'

Mario Soto dominated striking out 10 Chicago batters at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as
the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 7 to 3.
Soto(4-4) had a solid outing for Cincinnati. He was reached for 5 hits and 6
walks in 7 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to 3.51. Cincinnati finished
with 8 hits in the victory.
Ron Robinson earned his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Steve Trout(0-3).
He allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings. Jim Frey was upset after the
game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?',
he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's
printed in the rule book.'

Catcher Alan Ashby connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Houston
Astros topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 4 at The
Astrodome.
Bob Knepper(4-4) gave a fine effort for Houston. He surrendered 6 hits and 2
walks in 6 innings. Houston had 11 hits for the afternoon while Pittsburgh
had 8.
Dave Smith recorded his 10th save. Lee Tunnell(3-3) was the loser. By
surrending 4 runs in 5 innings his ERA jumped from 3.70 to 4.08.
MONTREAL AT SAN DIEGO

Third baseman Tim Wallach blasted 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Montreal
Expos defeated the San Diego Padres in 13 innings by the score of 8 to 7 at
JACK MURPHY STADIUM.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Montreal won the
hard fought contest in the 13th inning. Tim Raines laced a base-knock.
Raines was running on the next pitch and he stole second. Vance Law then
lashed a single scoring the run. Montreal rapped out 16 hits for the
afternoon.
The victory went to Gary Lucas(1-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Andy
Hawkins(4-5) took the loss in relief. He pitched 2 innings allowing 4 hits
and 1 walk.
