The first quarter was all about the field goal as the Titans scored twice on Ryan Succop field goals of 22 and 38 yards to take a 6-0 lead. With just over a minute left in the quarter Todd Peterson hit a 41 yard field goal to get the 49ers on the board, down 6-3.
With 2:24 left in the first half Todd Peterson hits a 24 yard field goal to tie the game 6-6 as the 49ers' drive stalled on the 7 yard line. The Titans answered by driving the distance and scoring the first touchdown of the game as Charlie Whitehurst hits Kendall Wright for a 6 yard touchdown to give the Titans a 13-6 lead with 53 seconds left in the half. The 49ers drive to the Titans 7 and Peterson kicks another 24 yard field goal to end the first half down 13-9.
Each team manages a field goal in the third quarter and after forty five minutes of play the Titans lead 16-12.
On their first drive of the final quarter Tim Rattay hits Brandon Lloyd for a 35 yard score to put the 49ers up 19-16 with 13:23 left in the game. On their next drive the Titans try a 51 yard field goal and Succop hits it to tie the game 19-19 with 9:36 left. After forcing a three and out the Titans take over on their own 38 and drive 62 yards on 6 plays, capped by a 9 yard touchdown pass from Whitehurst to Dexter McCluster to give the Titans a 26-19 lead. The 49ers drive into Titans territory to the 10 yard line but a Kevan Barlow fumble gives the ball to the Titans at the two minute warning. After forcing a three and out the 49ers start at their own 43 and drive to the Titan's 9 yard line, 1st and goal with 13 seconds left. Two incomplete passes later and it is 3rd and goal with 1 second left. Rattay is sacked by Kamerion Wimbley on the final play of the game to give the Titans a 26-19 victory as the 49ers move on with the loss.
49ers' quarterback Tim Rattay is the Most Unvaluable Player of the game as he was intercepted 3 times and saw too many drives stall inside the 10.
