11.30.84: at VCU (0-3)

The Rams have bottomed out, not even two years after winning the NIT championship. They are 0-3, and have been outscored by an average of 17.3 points a game. They have played Clemson, who is ranked, but the other two teams are not of any quality. They did return three starters from last year, but none of them are players you'd build a program around. The forwards, Chris Alcala (11.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Kenny Hartwell (10.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg) are the main scoring focus. This team rebounds poorly, and does not play defense. GW should finally get on track here.

VCU comes out in a press. Jack beats it easly and finds Kenny. VCU's Kenny (Hartwell) hits a three, and VCU has a 3-2 lead. Armbruster gets the lead back on a jumper, but Alcala responds. Jack drills a three to tie it at 7, but Andrew Burkey throws up a wild three that goes in. Milton hits a three, and VCU is up, 13-7.

Jack commits his first foul. GW has gone cold, and VCU is hot. Apparently, GW is prone to letting teams go on shooting streaks against them. Do that against a good team, and they're screwed. Jack throws down a dunk, and Hulett gets a layup, and it's tied. Kenny gets a steal, but can't convert. Then he commits his second foul. When Jack goes pro, I'm going to keep tabs on Kenny. He should have an interesting career. Ali gives GW a 15-13 lead with 14:00 left, and Armbruster scores. Jack comes back in with a 7-2-1, and a 17-16 lead.

Grayson scores off a Hector pass. Milford Akers, who would be mistaken for a retirement commune and a puppy farm in the future, scores for VCU. Stephen Hardie gives VCU a 23-22 lead, but Jack responds on the other end. Jack scores again...he has 11-3-1. Hulett snags two free throws. Jack gets fouled on the dunk, and hits both free throws. Denny Perez, getting some run with the first-teamers, gets a big block. Hulett scores, and it's 32-23, and VCU calls time.

GW does not get nearly as many blocks as they used to. Jack has to play more on the perimeter this year. Of course, he just gets a block. Jack keeps getting fouled, and keeps hitting free throws. He has 17, and GW leads 38-23. Jack gets a steal and a dunk before VCU finally scores. Perez hits a three?!?! Will anyone on this team take threes?

Peter Milton scores. It's 44-28. Hulett throws it down on Milton for his insolence, and Milton fouls him. 47-28, GW. Hulett hits a three, and he has 15. Milton has ten for VCU. It's 50-28, and GW is in full control. They control the boards 23-12. Frazier scores...he has a 4-3-0 line. Jack gets a tip-in...he has 21-9-1. Hulett finds Patterson, who gets his first points of the half, which ends 57-31. It's a 27-13 rebounding advantage, and VCU had seven turnovers. Jack has 21-9-1, Richie has 15-2-2. Milton has ten for VCU still. They didn't take points away from him or anything.

Jack gets a lob on an inbound from Hulett...he scores, and gets fouled. Woods throws down a big dunk. This game is just running out now...Milton scores to open things for VCU, at the 16:25 mark. Hartwell hits a three. VCU is fouling in their press. Jack hits from the corner, but Alcala responds. Jack hits from the baseline...he has 28-10-1. He gets fouled, and hits both. 68-40 GW with 13:26 left.

Hulett gets his first foul with 13:09 left. That's nuts. Armbruster fouls Tony Waring, who took the charge on Hulett. Jack finds Kenny for a basket. Only his second assist. Jack gets to the line, and hits both. It's 72-43...Alcala gets fouled by Woods, with the bucket. Milford Akers scores! Hulett hits two free throws for his first points of the half. Hector beats the press and gets a layup...Hartwell dribbles through every square inch of the offensive end and scores. Jack finds Perez, and Kenny gets a steal and a layup. It's 82-49, and it's all subs right now. Ali drills a three...Ferdinand Boutwell, this year's Chris Davis (with Davis still on the team), is in the game. Jack and Hulett come back in, along with Hector. Alcala draws a charge on Jack, but Jack draws one back. He comes out for good with four minutes left and the score 86-58. The final is 91-65.
