I've never understood this, esp. since it tends to come from people who have what I would call a generally appropriate distrust of government. A corporate-backed currency isn't inherently worse than a government-backed one. The treasury could put us back on the barter system at any time (with disastrous consequences, but they could do it). There's no more inherent value in legal tender than there is in a piece of plastic or whatever other means of conveyance.
