General Update

This happened during the Saturday finals:

The oldest high school yards record in the books has been broken.

At the 2019 Georgia 6-7A State Championships, Mill Creek High School’s Jake Magahey wrote his name in the history books in the 500 free. His time of 4:15.63 broke Jeff Kostoff of Upland High School’s previous National Public High School record of 4:16.39 set in 1983.

Magahey’s splits:

100 – 49.28
200 – 1:40.15 (50.87)
300 – 2:31.88 (51.73)
400 – 3:23.99 (52.11)
500 – 4:15.63 (51.64)

The National Independent High School record in the event is 4:12.87 set by Santa Margarita Catholic’s Grant Shoults in 2016, which still stands as the overall mark.

Before Magahey’s stellar performance, Kostoff’s mark stood as the oldest boys’ record to date. The oldest record, for boys or girls and any course, is Tracy Caulkins’ 100 SCM breaststroke of 1:07.47 set in 1981. Her record remains the indepedenent and overall high school mark.

Magahey does his club swimming with SwimAtlanta and his best time in the 500 free is a 4:14.61 that was fast enough to win the event at Juniors East in December where he also took first in the mile. The junior also won the 200 free (1:35.62) at the 2019 Georgia State Championships. - SwimmingWorld Magazine

In case you are curious - Jeff Kostoff was a 2 time Olympian (1984, 1988) finishing 6th and 9th in the 400 IM. So keep an eye on Magahey, he'll certainly be in discussions for Olympics over the next several cycles.

Edit to provide some context:
- During Jake's 500 yard swim, 3 of his 5 100 yard splits were faster than Bear has ever sprinted a 100 free with a dive.
- The race consisted on the 10 fastest swimmers in the state and 2nd place was 15.5 seconds behind (not on the same lap)
- The 10th place finisher in the heat was lapped (over 2 laps behind).
- This was also not his personal best swim for the 500 free.
