Recap
Rutgers showed early they were not equipped to deal with D-Stod as he took the rock 65 yards to the house on his second carry of the game, this after Rayburn had an interception returned 38 yards for a score by the Scarlet Knights Cory Katzman, just over 30 seconds earlier. I decide I am not going to put the weight of the game on Rayburn after this and we hitch the wagon to Stoddard. This proves effective in chewing up yards, but we can not hit the key passes when we need to. Early in the Third after an Erik Gainey pass to Johnny Ford pulls Rutgers to within 7 at 24-17, Andy Schroder decides to make his presence known. With Rutgers kicking away from Hitchcock, Schroder returns the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to pay dirt, after a field goal makes it 31-20, the Scarlet Knights kick to Schroder again!! This time he takes it 81 yards to the Rutgers 12. 2 plays later we are up 38-20, and from here we pull away as if Rutgers is chained to a post. Defensively Newsome is again a terror and Shields is much more active than in the last two games roaming sideline to sideline to make plays. One thing I don’t like are 11 penalties and I can’t even tie that to home cooking, we were just not smart in this area at all.

Injuries
Brian Riddell G-Out Torn Calf Muscle
Wade Such DT-Out Broken Ribs

Trippi will be available next week, but I may stay with Cedric Wiles who played well enough, for the majority of reps and only bring Trippi in on third and long situations, I do not want to lose him long term as he makes Newsome so much more dangerous, since they have to respect both sides when he is in.

Recruiting

Visits
None

Commits
Ricky Schurman TE Spanish Fork, UT Overall 215 Position 6

We get a commit from one of the nations top Tight Ends, but we never really doubted we get Schurman as he grew up 15 minutes from Provo and idolized us. What is a concern is that we get no more visits and I don’t want to get caught scrambling late in the process. We also lose 6 recruits this week to other Schools, so I am going to re-evaluate our current direction.

Mountain West Scoreboard
BYU 52 Rutgers 20
Air Force 44 Dartmouth 10
Brown 20 Colorado St 19
New Mexico 35 New Mexico St 7
San Diego St 31 Yale 7

What is up with Colorado St? They have beaten Colorado, Air Force and SMU, and lost to two Ivy Teams!! New Mexico shakes off their drubbing to throttle their cross state rivals and Air Force manhandles Dartmouth.

Next weeks Schedule
Colorado St at BYU ESPN 2
Air Force at New Mexico
UNLV at Wyoming
San Diego St at Utah

I am very wary about out match up with CSU this week and have no idea which Rams team will show up, they are dangerous and we better be focused. Utah and Wyoming both have key games, which they need to win to be considered serious contenders, while Air Force should even their league mark up easily against New Mexico.

BYU Alumni in the NFL
Harvey Geary LB Arizona-Reserve: Geary again gets substantial minutes in the Cards 23-9 Win against Minnesota, he records 4 tackles and one assist, and is looking a lot more comfortable out there. Cardinals are now 4-2

Calvin Shaw RB Denver-Starter: Denver still has not won as the Steelers drop them 38-26, but Shaw has far and away his best outing yet, going for 87 yards on 18 carries (4.8 YPC) He was definitely in a groove today and hopefully will gain some confidence from this effort.

Dwight Gatlin QB Arizona-DNP: Still watching and Waiting

Barry Wohlman DT Arizona-Reserve: Barry gets in this week, only for one play, but he has felt the rush of a regular Season game. No Stats.

Barry Irish CB Minnesota-Reserve: Playing nickel back again, in the Loss to Arizona, Irish defends a pass, has 5 tackles, an assist and a sack, but also gives up 3 catches.

Ed Cramer DT NY Giants-Practice Squad.

Harris Diaz LB St Louis-Practice Squad:

Kyle Ballard G St Louis-Practice Squad: Rhett is cleared to play and Ballard goes back to the inactive roster.

Ron Lathon T-Free Agent
Desmond Coffey K-Free Agent
Bennie Vance CB-Free Agent
Irv Matney S-Free Agent

Still no action on the Free Agent front and I contact Vance about becoming a graduate assistant, he will ponder and get back to me.
