Recap
We click on all cylinders today with the only hiccups being caused by Rayburn’s erratic throws which result in 2 interceptions, the first of which is returned 65 yards for a score by the Aztecs Gene Middleton. Not to be outdone, Roderick Jamison, starting for the injured Darrin Shields picks off San Diego St QB Oscar Shuman twice, returning the first one 46 yards for his own score which puts us up 14-0 after one. After Middleton’s pick cuts it to 14-7 at the half, we explode for 21 points in the third quarter on the strength of Three Rayburn TD passes to Leland Fletcher. Julio Fredrickson topped the scoring with a 4 yard scamper in the fourth for the final margin. On the day we held an advantage of 433 total yards to 159. Roderick added 9 total tackles to his 2 picks to take player of the game honors, though we should have Shields back for Notre Dame I feel confident with Jamison in there if Darrin can’t go. Stoddard’s 123 yard effort now gives him 1034 yards for the Season, his fourth straight 1000 yard Season as a Cougar. He will definitely be missed when he moves on.

Injuries
Nobody out

Riddell and Shields are both upgraded to doubtful for Notre Dame and Shields will see sporadic playing time at the very least. In addition to these two DT Wade Such (Ribs) WR Leland Fletcher (ankle) T Tom Longmate (Bruised Ribs) and WR Andy Schroder (Hand) are banged up but should be ready to play Saturday.

Recruiting

Visits
None

Commits
Jorge Bozeman TE Honolulu, HI Overall 398 Position 13
John Battistone WR Columbus Junction, IA Overall 107 Position 11
Sherman Butler T Midvale, UT Overall 690 Position 60
Rodney Cano DT Hartford, CT Overall 360 Position 28

Rodney Cano was a late recruit and he commits during his visit to the Y, the other 3 recruits are all top 20 at their positions with the exception of Butler, who nonetheless should be solid. We are really excited about Battistone, who runs great routes and has a tendency to always find the open spot in coverage. He caught 70 passes his Senior Season and could start right away with Hitchcock and Fletcher departing. We lose two highly sought after LB recruits with Joel Morton going to Wisconsin and Roy Meteer selecting Air Force. We will have to scramble here to get some decent recruits over the next two to three weeks.

Mountain West Scoreboard
BYU 42 San Diego St 7
Air Force 20 Wyoming 17
New Mexico 45 Utah 17

Air Force takes their must win game against Wyoming leaving us as the only unbeaten School in league play, we still play both these teams so neither is out of the race yet. Utah’s shocking loss to New Mexico relegates the Utes to the spoiler role and they will be hard pressed to make it to the post Season with games left against us, Wyoming, Air Force and West Virginia. In fact a 3-8 Season is entirely possible for the hated School up North.

It is surprising we get no TV love for our big clash with the Irish as they are ranked 17th and we are ranked 7th heading into the Weekend. This will be our first big test in my mind and I am a little nervous about Rayburn’s inconsistency throwing the ball and his 18/13 TD to Interception ratio does not excite me. Oh yeah, New Mexico’s non League game is against an Ivy Foe….Shocker!!

BYU Alumni in the NFL
Harvey Geary LB Arizona-Bye:

Calvin Shaw RB Denver-Starter: Congrats to Shaw on his first 100 yard game as a pro as he goes for 101 yards on 29 carries in the Bronco’s 26-18 win at Cincinnati, their first of the Season. He also catches 2 passes for 58 yards in his finest game as a pro.

Dwight Gatlin QB Arizona-Bye:

Barry Wohlman DT Arizona-Bye:

Barry Irish CB Minnesota-Reserve: Minnesota falls to 0-8 as Irish sees a slight increase in playing time, recording 2 tackles and giving up one catch. The Vikings are truly hurting as San Francisco edges them 24-21, their second 3 point loss in a row.

Ed Cramer DT NY Giants-Practice Squad:

Harris Diaz LB St Louis-Practice Squad:

Kyle Ballard G St Louis-Practice Squad:

Ron Lathon T-Free Agent
Desmond Coffey K-Free Agent
Bennie Vance CB-Free Agent
Irv Matney S-Free Agent

A quiet week for our alumni, outside of Shaw’s stout performance for the Bronco’s. It has been a rough year for 5 alumni on active rosters as their teams are a combined 5-19.
