Steve Victory JOURNAL - NCT 2021

Yep, that’s right. Little ol’ Sacred Heart knocks Alabama out of the NCT in the first round. It’s actually a great game if you’re just a casual fan of basketball tuning in. The teams play run-and-gun for 40 minutes, then go to overtime. The Pioneers get hot, outscore the Tide 16-4 and pull the 95-83 upset.

Of course if you’re an Alabama fan, trying to relive the magic of 2019, it’s a heartbreaking day. The Tide had high hopes, even after some late stumbles in this season. The one-and-done finish just confirmed that this was somewhat of an underachieving bunch. Is it the coach? The players? Expectations that are too high? A combination of all three? Dissension over persisting rumors that Charles Barkley wants to coach the team? Karma? Negative press? Bad pizza the night before games?

Whatever the case, Victory’s team reaches official program expectations by getting a .500 conference record. But the 21-11 overall mark still doesn’t sit too well with him or others surrounding the program (especially Frank-Fred)…

Mississippi State goes on to the Final Four (again!) but loses to Illinois in the finals. Arkansas reaches the ACT finals but falls to Indiana. It’s the third year in a row SEC teams have played in both the NCT and ACT championship games. Alabama has been a part of two title games (one in each tournament) but is nowhere to be found this season…

Alabama has no award winners other than a few players of the week. Earl Dixon (13.9 points per game), Lincoln Dearman (13.7) and Ely Wilson (13.4) lead a balanced scoring attack for ‘Bama. Wilson, Dearman and Jabari Wolff all grab more than 8 boards per game. Cliff Williams is the assists leader (6.2 per game). Dearman and Wolff both block two shots a game on average.

Dixon and Wilson get their degrees and are off to the real world. No NBA draftees this season… On to season #19 for Coach V...
