Steve Victory JOURNAL – 2021-22 Wrapup

Xavier goes on to win the 2022 NCT over Notre Dame 77-69. Florida and Miami (!) were the other Final Four teams. Maryland makes the Sweet 16 but that was about it for the ACC. Regular season champ UNC beat College of Charleston (!!) in the first round before losing to Memphis in round two…

Miami of Ohio beats USC in the ACT final. Mount St. Mary’s and Cincinnati were the other ACT Final Four teams.

How about Charles Barkley’s first season at Alabama? Well, it was a roller coaster ride for sure. Barkley wins his debut over Binghamton, then the Tide loses the next four games – to Oklahoma State, Nebraska, East Carolina (82-57 – ouch!) and *gulp* Oral Roberts. Other early losses come to Bucknell and SW Missouri State. Frank-Fred is absolutely pounding his head against a wall, as are most folks in Tuscaloosa. Steve Victory suddenly looks like an angel to ‘Bama hoops fans, even though many led the charge to ride him out of town a few months earlier.

Barkley finally straightens some things out, and the Tide rolls to a 12-4 record in the SEC. But a first-round exit from the SEC tournament keeps ‘Bama out of the NCT. Then The Citadel knocks Alabama out of the first round of the ACT. So it wasn’t just Victory after all.

Barkley loses his cool demeanor and reams out the press after the ACT loss, which left the Tide with a final mark of 18-15. “Don’t even start with me, Sheriff,” Barkley says to the visiting tabloid journalist, in town for a special series on ex-NBA players-turned-coaches. “And keep this Fred-Frank guy out of here. He’s a maniac. He keeps pounding his noggin on our locker room door.” Victory recruit Jabari Wolff does make the all SEC team, which Victory appreciates.

The final line on ACC Player of the Year Rogers Gravitt: 18.4 ppg, 4.3 apg, 4.7 rpg, 43 percent from the 3-point line. And the best part – he has one year of eligibility remaining…
