Steve Victory JOURNAL - NCT Champs 2025!!!!

A few notes as the celebrations on Hillsborough Street start to wind down:

• State’s run through the tournament proved amazing. The Pack beat foes by an average of 15.2 points per game. Only Syracuse kept it close, losing by 1. Three foes, including both in the Final Four, lost to NCSU by 20 or more.

• SG Andre Baker, the Final Four MVP, turns out to be the team MVP as well. He led State in scoring with 16 ppg. He also was a great rebounder, nabbing 6.3 a game (third best). He was second in assists with 3.4 pg. and first in steals with 2.2 pg. Nice junior year. What will he be like as a senior?

• SF/PF Jon Henry opted to go pro early. But he finished on a great note, scoring 14.9 ppg. He also snagged 7 rpg and blocked 2.5 shots per game.

• With only two recruiting spots to fill, Victory gets another fine class. He’s prized pick is SF Calvin Carstensen from Arkansas. He’s the #17 player in all the land, according to a 5-star service. He’s big in scoring (20 ppg) and rebounding (13 rpg). Look out in a year or two... The other player is more of a project: PG Roy Wrenn is the #76 prospect in the land, scoring 11 ppg and averaging 10 apg for his San Antonio high school. He may redshirt, since he has several stars ahead of him and has excellent potential.

• Baker put his name on a couple of State records. Most free throw attempts in a season: 249. Most steals in a season: 90.

• SG Marcus Hill and PF/C Deon Brown make the all-ACC freshman honors list. Baker should have been all-ACC but was left off...

• Nebraska beat Rhode Island 75-61 for the ACT title. Louisville, the team that knocked Alabama out of the ACT, made it to the Final Four, as did Stanford.

• College of Charleston went 15-15 and didn’t make the post-season...

• Alabama chose to retain Charles Barkley as coach...

As the first few weeks pass after the title, the rumor mill starts heating up again. Only this time, it’s not about Steve Victory. His trusty assistant the past few seasons, Jeff “The Sheriff” Wilt, is being courted by some Division 1 schools to take over his own program... Stay tuned... The Sheriff could be busting loose... (Victory does get several intriguing job offers, including one to take over at UNC-Chapel Hill, but turns them down...)
