Group B, Round 1, Game 1

#6 Houston @ #1 Philadelphia

Starting Pitchers

Brett Myers (HOU) vs. Roy Halladay (PHI)

Game Recap

Philadelphia- 5, Houston- 4 (11 innings) -- In a back and forth game that saw several lead changes, the Phillies finally got it done in extra innings. Carlos Ruiz led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk, and Dane Sardinha pinch ran for him. After a Ross Gload line out to third, John Mayberry laced a double to the gap in right center. With Sardinha's 88 speed, he scored easily to walk off for Philadelphia.

Group B, Round 1, Game 2

#5 Toronto vs. #2 Detroit

Starting Pitchers

Ricky Romero (TOR) vs. Justin Verlander (DET)

Game Recap

Toronto- 6, Detroit- 1 -- The first of 2 games in this first round of Group B that got shuffled around thanks to incorrect initial seeding that wasn't caught until later, Ricky Romero pitched a complete game gem for the Blue Jays. He allowed 1 hit in the game, a solo homer to Ryan Raburn with 1 out in the 9th inning, very close to history. Toronto used a pair of 3 run innings to put it away, as Yunel Escobar hit a 3 run homer in the 2nd inning, and Aaron Hill had an RBI single and John McDonald had a 2 RBI double in the 8th.

Group B, Round 1, Game 3

#4 Cincinnati at #3 San Francisco

Starting Pitchers

Bronson Arroyo (CIN) vs. Tim Lincecum (SF)

Game Recap

San Francisco- 1, Cincinnati- 0 -- This one was a classic pitching duel, with both starters going deep into the 7th inning before turning it over to the bullpens. While both teams had a fair amount of base runners, neither team could scratch across a run, that is until Nate Schierholtz hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th for the Giants. Holding that lead didn't come easy for San Fran, while Javier Lopez pitched a perfect 8th, Brian Wilson wasn't as sharp, giving up 2 base hits to open the top of the 9th. He then got Paul Janish to hit into a fielders choice, struck out Drew Stubbs, and picked Ryan Hanigan off of 2nd base to end the game in a most unconventional way.
