Group B, Round 4, Game 1

Cincinnati at Detroit

Starting Pitchers

Homer Bailey (CIN) vs. Brad Penny (DET)

Game Recap

Cincinnati- 7, Detroit- 4 -- Both starting pitchers had to endure a 39 minute rain delay in the top of the 4th, but both returned to the mound. Bailey was sharp in 7 shutout innings of work, and Penny settled down after giving up a 3 run homer to Chris Heisey in the top of the 1st. Things got a little dicey for the Reds as they entered the bottom of the 9th up 7-0. Detroit took advantage of an error by Yonder Alonso to start the inning, then drew 2 walks and had 4 singles in the inning. With the lead 7-3 and the bases loaded, Cincinnati turned to closer Sam LeCure to get the final out. He gave up a single to Magglio Ordonez, Ramon Santiago hit a ball about as hard as he could without leaving the park. It settled in Alonso's glove and the Reds escaped, literally.

Game Recap

Houston- 8, Toronto- 7 (10 innings) -- Neither starting pitcher was real effective in this one, as Cecil was chased in the 4th and Happ only made it through 5. Down 7-5 going into the top of the 9th, the Blue Jays got an RBI single from Rajai Davis and an RBI fly out from David Cooper to tie it at 7. In the bottom of the 10th, Jimmy Paredes and Jason Michaels both singled, and after Carlos Corporan grounded out, Michael Bourn hit a double to the gap to score Paredes and walk it off for the Astros!
