Steve Victory JOURNAL – Final Four 2025

FLASH FORWARD TO LATE MARCH 2025 -- Victory's FOURTH year at NC State

Coach Steve Victory and his trusted assistant Jeff “The Sheriff” Wilt walk out onto the floor at America West Arena in their Sunday best – Armani suits and fire-red silk ties. It’s Final Four time, and N.C. State is here in Phoenix, playing for its first national championship since the late great Jim Valvano led the Cardiac Pack to the 1983 crown!

“Isn’t this amazing?” Victory asks The Sheriff as the two stare up at the sea of red and white in the stands. “I’ll bet most of the people in this building are Wolfpackers – and they’re loud.”

It’s only Victory’s fourth year as coach at NCSU, and already he has his “new” team poised to cut down the nets. While it took him a decade at Alabama – and even then people grumbled about this and that – his group at State has clicked pretty quickly. The Wolfpack crew, wearing road red jerseys, look sharp in pre-game warmups.

“Glad you’re here, buddy,” Victory says to Wilt, who unexpectedly joined his staff a couple of seasons ago after another assistant jumped ship to coach Fordham. “Two more wins, and we’ll set off the party of all parties on Hillsborough Street. And we’ll both be doing our best Cozell McQueens on the top of the backboards.”

Indeed it has been a crazy couple of seasons for Victory and company. He just wanted to make the tournament after going 14-16 in his first year in Raleigh and 12-19 the following season. It’s seems almost unbelievable the Pack is playing for the national title now, needing only to get past Colorado and the winner of the Oklahoma-Wake Forest contest to capture the 2025 NCT trophy. And it seems improbable the Sheriff is along with Victory as a coach rather than as the neighborhood tabloid journalist looking for dirt in every corner of the locker room…

The Sheriff spots Charles Barkley in one of the luxury boxes high above the arena. “He looks lonely up there,” the Sheriff says with a smile. “The fans at ‘Bama have been tough on him since he missed out on the NCT this season, especially with the football team winning the Sugar Bowl again.”

“Don’t even get me started on Alabama fans,” Victory says. “They’re brutal…”
