I actually had another point I mean to make so ...
it's really amazing how, after a certain point in life at least, how few fights eventually occur if you just bring along a relatively quiet determination & maybe a well-timed comment that brings home the reality of the situation to your opposite number.
It's not foolproof of course -- and never fight a drunk you're aren't willing to kill, 'cause you don't know what his intentions may be in his altered state -- but on the whole those two things tend to prevent most situations from reaching that one extra step.
