Insomnia strikes me at the most random and often the most inconvenient times, usually when I have to be up very early the next morning.

So it's no surprise that I'm awake at 12:42 am, staring at the list of recruits. We've agreed to go scout the High Six and I have to tell you, it feels amazing going from $7,800 a month to recruit with to $10,519 a month. Wonderful job by our athletic board.

We send out a flurry of offers in Month 2 and Month 3 sees us pull one of our offers, when we realize there's no hope of getting a guy. Cortez is once again hitting Spain for a big man I think has a ton of potential.

Month 4, we're yanking another offer to an Ivy League lock.

And we get brutalized in the early signing period.

PF Thomas Garrow chooses Cleveland State, C Ricky Timmons goes to Vermont, and C Owen Hutchins inks with East Carolina. At this point, we're left with two 3* prospects still in play, one of whom we're fighting Sacred Heart for. The other is the Spanish national, Sofronio Rey, who Cortez is working hard on.

Again, no one redshirts.

All-Time Scholarship Players by State
Indiana: 1
Massachusetts: 2 (+1)
Maryland: 1
Michigan: 1
North Carolina: 3
New York: 2
Pennsylvania: 1
Rhode Island: 2
Canada: 1
Spain: 1

Bold = New State

My Midwest roots have helped us out a fair bit, but as you might expect, the Eastern seaboard is still our greatest source of talent.

Bryant Bulldogs 2016-2017 Starting Lineup
PG Hershel Gaughan (Sr)*
Gaughan again fends off Craig Smith and will finish out his college career as a three year starter. I'm actually happy with our PG depth this year and will miss Gaughan when he's gone.

SG Napoleon "Dynamite Flash" Gordon (Jr)
An invaluable 6th man last season, he steps up to the starting lineup after Junior Dillard's graduation. I expect big things this year from our French-Canadian, especially with his fantastic 3 point shooting.

SF Mack Rasmussen (Fr)
A bit of a gamble here, as he played point guard in high school, but I think Rasmussen has the potential to be Blair Isley's replacement. At 6'5, he'll have the size to play the 3, although our season may hinge on if our highest ever ranked recruit is up to the task.

PF Lance Tully (Jr)*
There's better inside shooters, but Tully's rebounding ability makes me trust him a lot more over the other options we have in the post. Still holds the school and Northeast record for most rebounds in a game with 24.

C Joaquin Bravo (So)*
Vying to become the first four year starter since the recently departed Blair Isley. Right now it looks like he'll do it, as there's nobody challenging him. Furthermore, we played terribly when he was out with injury last season.

The big question of course is how we'll survive without Blair Isley. Look for us to go with a very fast paced, inside orientation offense this season, at least to start the year. It's going to be interesting seeing how it all pans out.

86-79 season-opening loss on the road to Lehigh. 19 points, 7 rebounds for David Lilly off the bench, 13 points for Napoleon Gordon, and a fantastic 11 point, 13 rebound, 5 assist, 2 block outing for Joaquin Bravo. Craig Smith picks up a day-to-day injury, but he insists on playing through it.

A 74-63 road win over Winston-Salem State evens our record and we're led by a host of 12 point players - Napoleon Gordon, Mack Rasmussen, Lester Henning, and David Lilly. Just behind with 11 points is Joaquin Bravo.

Our first home game is against UC-Davis and we let one slip away, 86-80. Hell of a game by Joaquin Bravo with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Craig Smith stepped up with 11 bench points, but foul trouble kept most of our starters off the court for far too much of the game, and our bench is pretty weak this year.

SF Charles Loucks stabs us in the heart by committing to Sacred Heart, leaving us with just one 3* player. At this point, I'm tempted just to keep the sixth scholarship open for a transfer.

A busy December starts with a 75-65 road win over South Dakota, Hershel Gaughan's 17 points and Napoleon "Dynamite Flash" Gordon's 13 points instrumental in the victory.

I'm embarrassed when 1-6 Hartford beats us 62-59, even if on their court. Napoleon Gordon's 15 points and Mack Rasmussen's 10 points just didn't cut it when we played sloppy ball.

We top Albany 88-81 on the road thanks to Mack Rasmussen's coming out party of 21 points and Joaquin Bravo's 19 points. Maybe Mack can be the new Blair after all.

First trip home in a long time and we win a scrubby 62-51 game over NJIT. Joaquin Bravo doubles for 12 points and 12 rebounds to be our saving grace.

Agonizing 79-78 loss to Seattle in front of the home fans. Not going to discuss it even though we had great performances.

FUCK! Another god damned motherfucking close ass fucking home loss, 100-98 to asslicking cuntfuck Yale. Fucking Yallies.

Even a 91-80 road win over Morgan State can't quell my rage over the waste of our homestand. 13, 12, 10 points for David Lilly, Lance Tully, and Napoleon Gordon. Also a surprise 11 bench points by true freshman Grady Chong.

The Blackbirds of Long Island make us look like fools at home 71-58 in the Northeast opener. Napoleon Gordon (17 points) and Lester Henning (10 bench points) were the only two Bulldogs who played.

89-78 home win over Central Connecticut State we sorely needed to end the month. All five starters score 10 points or better, with Napoleon "Dynamite Flash" Gordon taking the lead at 19 points. David Lilly chips in 11 bench points... right before getting his stupid ass suspended for flunking a class.

Napoleon Gordon's performance was all the more impressive considering he was playing with Blurred Vision.

On a much happier note, we secured three commitments, SG Chris Templeton of Bartram John High School in Philadelphia, PA, C Mike Puentes from Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, RI, and finally, PF Sofronio Rey of Covadonga, Spain. Puentes was Mr. Basketball Rhode Island, but I wouldn't get too excited about that. He's no Lance Tully.

A lot of teams tried to jump in on him later in the game, but once Cortez got his hooks in, talking up the same line he used with Joaquin Bravo, only with the added bonus of Bravo, it was already too late.

Oh, and a new highest ever recruit ranking is set. Young Mr. Rey is #204 overall.

Fairleigh-Dickinson looks like the early class of the conference again.

The ugliest game in Bryant history - a 47-39 road loss to Mt. St. Mary's. Yeah, not talking about it.

Then another teeth-yanking 94-91 road loss to Robert Morris. 16, 14, 12 points from Lester Henning, Joaquin Bravo, and Herschel Gaughan. Too god damned many close losses this year.

We barely beat Monmouth 85-84 at home, which goes to show much our depth is hurting without David Lilly. Kudos to Joaquin Bravo with 21 points and 14 rebounds, Napoleon Gordon with 16 points, and Lester Henning's 15 bench points. But it was way too close for comfort.

Joaquin Bravo dominates St. Francis (PA) for 22 points and 12 rebounds to ignite an 88-71 road win over the Northeast's worst team. Mack Rasmussen scores 19 and we get 11 and 10 points from Napoleon Gordon and Lance Tully.

Napoleon "Dynamite Flash" Gordon and Joaquin Bravo each score 16 in our 75-69 road win over St. Francis (NY), with 12 and 11 points from Mack Rasmussen and Herschel Gaughan.

91-73 road rout of Quinnipiac is our best game of the season, featuring 29 points from Napoleon "Dynamite Flash" Gordon, 24 points and 12 rebounds from Lance Tully, and 16 points from Mack Rasmussen.

Our win streak comes to an end, 69-60 in Monmouth. Joaquin Bravo and Napoleon Gordon couldn't save us this time with 14 and 12 points.

Back home we play like complete shit in losing to shitty St. Francis (PA) 80-71. I break a clipboard and throw it in disgust against the nearest wall. We can't afford to lose games like that.

PF Jamie Spradlin from Zehner, Canada, signs, but PG Michael Shackleford stuns us by choosing Fairfield at the last minute. PG Britt McKenzie, a 3* PG from North Carolina, has some interest in us, so we hit him hard in hopes that we might grab a steal.

We're at .500 overall and in conference, with Fairleigh-Dickinson running away with the title. They're 9-1 and then it's a crowd of 6-4 and 5-5 teams.

And of course we blow it big time with an 80-65 loss in Long Island. Joaquin Bravo and Lance Tully did okay with 16 and 11 points, but the Blackbirds burned us twice this year.

71-67 home loss to Quinnipiac and I'm ready to throw the towel in on the season. 67-59 loss to Central Connecticut State confirms it.

Upsetting Fairleigh-Dickinson 89-78 to snap the five game losing streak is nice, but not enough. A truckload of double-digit scorers is the winning combination.

92-68 home loss to Robert Morris and goodbye .500 in the Northeast.

Whatever.

81-70 L - vs Sacred Heart
76-64 W - @ Wagner
58-45 W - vs Mt. St. Mary's

Characteristic of our season - 84-55 rout of CS-Bakersfield puts us at 14-15 overall, and Joaquin Bravo (16 points, 12 rebounds), Lester Henning (19 bench points), Lance Tully (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Mack Rasmussen (12 points) all stood out... and three of our players get significantly hurt.

Lester Henning - 8 days
Craig Smith - 8 days
Napoleon Gordon - 23 days (his fourth or fifth injury of the season - I just didn't report some of the minor ones)

Yeah.

We play just well enough to sneak into the conference tournament as the 8 seed, but I've a bridge in Brooklyn to sell if you think we're winning. And of course Britt McKenzie disses us for Georgia State of all places. Two open scholarships for transfers? Sounds good to me.

Two of our still injured guys play against 1 seed Fairleigh-Dickinson, because really, what choice do we have? Naturally we lose 98-80, but Lester Henning (20 points), Hershel Gaughan (14 points), Mack Rasmussen (13 points), and Joaquin Bravo (12 points) all made it a closer game than most people expected.

Although Monmouth upset the 2 seed for the second year in a row as the 7 seed, Fairleigh-Dickinson handled the Hawks this team and beat 4 seed Long Island to earn the automatic bid.

The Knights earned the 13 seed in the East, the highest ever seeding of a Northeast team since I arrived.

The tournaments can wait. I'm still pissed about how the season went down. Losing David Lilly to academic suspension absolutely killed us. Hope I still have a job after this.
