We began the summer without a scholarship to offer, because the game generated a really bad walk-on to fill Avery Sullivan's roster spot. I cut the walk-on, so now I have one available scholarship.

Last year's big haul of recruits included several perimeter players, so this year I'll make a big man my top priority. Here's how our call list looks as the recruiting season begins:

Code:
#1 VILLANOVA Recruiting Name Pos Ht Wt Rating Interest State -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam Marshall SF 6-9 214 ***** Very High New Jersey Zach Cohen C 6-10 204 **** Very High New Jersey Kelly Watts C 6-8 200 **** Very High Georgia Jonathan Taylor PF 6-5 208 **** Very High New York Nathaniel Gwinn SF 6-4 206 **** Very High Pennsylvania Scottie Finkelstein SG 6-2 185 *** Very High New Jersey Bankston Cannon PF 6-7 202 *** Very High New York Ezra Love PF 6-9 235 ***** High Indiana Erasmo Napier C 6-7 240 ***** High South Dakota Monte Watson SF 6-5 194 ***** High Illinois Reggie Johnson C 6-9 228 **** High Pennsylvania Jacody Hinton PF 6-9 252 **** High District of Columbia James Gardner C 6-8 265 **** High Illinois Kevin Edwards C 6-9 230 **** High Georgia Berry Stewart C 6-10 229 **** High Connecticut Tyler Holland SG 6-6 201 *** High New York Garth Alexander C 6-9 248 *** High Georgia DeQuinn Baldwin PG 6-3 178 ***** Average Maryland Trystan Maddox C 6-8 241 *** Average Virginia

Recruiting is uniquely challenging when you have only one scholarship to offer. I wouldn't be surprised if almost all these players have at least one scholarship offer by August 1, which is when I'll have a chance to see their ratings.

Sam Marshall is the #1 recruit in the nation. He averages 34 points, 9 rebounds, and almost 7 assists a game. There's no way his ratings won't be good. But is Sam the best fit for our program? I can't know for sure until I see his evaluation.

Marshall lists us among his top schools, but we're fifth on his list, behind North Carolina, Boston College, West Virginia, and Vanderbilt. How likely am I to win a battle against four other elite programs, when I'm starting out in fifth place?

If I had two scholarships available, I wouldn't hesitate to offer one to Sam. I could be patient and see if visiting the Marshall family and bringing Sam to campus would lead him to choose our program. I'd hold onto the other scholarship until we've evaluated our targets more thoroughly and offer it next month.

Many of the top players in the class will make their choice on November 1. If I go all in on Sam Marshall and he signs elsewhere, our second (and third and fourth) choices might also have signed, too.

I decide to offer Marshall anyway. Let's see if having an offer in hand causes him to view our school more positively.

Once I find out more about the players on our call list, I'll let you know what I think of some of them.
