Nov. 20-26, 2017
2 feature games this week, and one took place in a season tournament.
11/21/17- Brooklyn Classic First Round-
(8) Charlotte (Timmy Tribble) vs.
(1) #20 Florida (Noah Oppenheimer) -- The 49ers kept it close throughout, and both teams fouled, a lot. The difference is most of Charlotte's fouls were while Florida was shooting, as they shot 16 free throws compared to just 34 from Florida. Can't blame the loss on that though, as Charlotte only had 3 more fouls in the game, they just came at bad times.
Final Score: #20 Florida- 81, Charlotte- 73
11/22/17-
Colorado (Rob Nielsen) @
Michigan State (Al Mighty) -- The Spartans went on a run late thanks to some hot shooting, and they survived and actually ended up winning by double digits.
Final Score: Michigan State- 76, Colorado- 62
Now for the rest of the weekly recap:
Hartford (David Ginsberg) -- 4-1, 0-0 America East.
11/23/17- Wooden Legacy First Round vs. (4) Southern (W 59-47).
11/24/17- Wooden Legacy Semifinal vs. (8) Navy (W 62-53).
11/26/17- Wooden Legacy Championship vs. (7) Hampton (W 66-50).
It's been all or nothing for the Hawks. In the 3 seasons since this dynasty started, they've won 2 tournaments and finished last in the other. Although they didn't have to see either of the top 2 seeds, they still took care of business against who they did play. Congrats to Coach Ginsberg on another season tournament title.
ECU (Al Hutt) -- 1-1, 0-0 American.
No games this week for Coach Hutt or the Pirates.
Tulsa (Will Brown) -- 4-1, 0-0 American.
11/20/17- Gulf Coast Showcase First Round vs. (7) Lafayette (W 94-76).
11/21/17- Gulf Coast Showcase Semifinal vs. (3) Georgia Tech (W 77-62).
11/22/17- Gulf Coast Showcase Championship vs. (1) Kansas State (W 54-53).
How about that for the Golden Hurricane? They take care of business against some good competition and become yet another FOFC team to win a conference tournament. I believe that's 3 now for this season.
Davidson (Randolph Childress) -- 1-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10.
11/23/17 at South Florida (W 74-56).
The Wildcats get back on the winning side of things with an easy road victory.
Clemson (Charles Johnson) -- 1-2, 0-0 ACC.
11/22/17 vs. High Point (W 85-68).
11/26/17 at Iowa State (L 67-63).
A split this week for the Tigers, who couldn't hold on to a lead late at Iowa State. They'll be kicking themselves for that.
Duke (Dean Hoo) -- 2-1, 0-0 ACC.
11/26/17 vs. Drexel (W 90-74).
An easy win for the Blue Devils who are back on track after an upset loss in their season tournament.
#3 Kansas (Dave Johnson) -- 3-1, 0-0 Big 12.
11/24/17- Corpus Christi Coastal Classic Semifinal vs. (4) LaSalle (L 73-70).
11/25/17- Corpus Christi Coastal Classic 3rd Place Game vs. (2) #17 Butler (W 77-65).
Tough loss for the Jayhawks as they never really could get over the hump against a very good LaSalle team, but they recovered to take 3rd.
TCU (Bee Mighty) -- 2-1, 0-0 Big 12.
No games this week for Coach Mighty and the Horned Frogs.
Michigan (Cillian Tribble) -- 3-3, 0-0 Big Ten.
11/22/17- Battle for Atlantis First Round vs. (5) Tennessee (W 94-69).
11/23/17- Battle for Atlantis Semifinal vs. (1) Arizona (L 72-59).
11/24/17- Battle for Atlantis 3rd Place Game vs. (3) #7 Cincinnati (L 70-56).
11/26/17 at San Diego State (W 66-65).
Heavy week for the Wolverines, who split their 4 games. They ended the week well and started the week well. The 2 games in the middle, not so good.
Michigan State (Al Mighty) -- 3-1, 0-0 Big Ten.
11/22/17 vs. Colorado- feature game, highlighted above.
11/25/17 at Coppin State (W 84-42).
Good week for the Spartans who beat a tough Colorado team then double up Coppin State.
Northwestern (Ess Vee) -- 4-0, 0-0 Big Ten.
11/20/17- Detroit Regional First Round vs. (4) Seattle (W 63-54).
11/22/17- Detroit Regional Championship vs. (3) USC Upstate (W 86-61).
Another season tournament won by an FOFC club. The Wildcats will feel fortunate not to draw #2 seed Pepperdine in the championship, but as I've said all along, you have to beat who gets put in front of you, and they've done that so far.
Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 1-4, 0-0 Big West.
11/20/17- Gulf Coast Showcase First Round vs. (5) Wofford (L 84-71).
11/21/17- Gulf Coast Showcase Consolation Round vs. (8) UNC Wilmington (L 61-43).
11/22/17- Gulf Coast Showcase 7th Place Game vs. (7) Lafayette (L 69-62).
What is going on with the Warriors? They lost 3 games against very beatable competition this week, and 2 of the games were double digit losses. They better pick it up now or it'll be a looooong season.
Charlotte (Timmy Tribble) -- 1-2, 0-0 Conference USA.
11/21/17- Brooklyn Classic First Round vs. (1) #20 Florida- feature game, highlighted above.
11/24/17- Brooklyn Classic Consolation Round vs. (4) Arizona State (L 68-44).
11/25/17- Brooklyn Classic 7th Place Game vs. (7) Vermont (W 70-61).
Good for the 49ers for not getting swept this week. Those 2 losses were against good competition though, so we'll see how they respond from here.
Rice (Charlie Shocker) -- 3-1, 0-0 Conference USA.
11/23/17 at Lamar (W 78-72).
11/25/17 vs. Grand Canyon (L 74-56).
Still trying to figure out how the Owls lost to Grand Canyon who don't seem to be a very good team. Nevertheless, that was Rice's first loss of the season, and the schedule gets much tougher in December.
Monmouth (Thomas Carrano) -- 1-2, 0-0 MAAC.
No games this week for Coach Carrano and the Hawks.
Norfolk State (Payten Carrano) -- 3-1, 0-0 MEAC.
11/23/17 at Radford (W 62-47).
Good win for the Spartans in the midst of a 4 game road trip. They've got a few tough, but winnable ones coming up.
Colorado (Rob Nielsen) -- 1-3, 0-0 Pac 12.
11/20/17 vs. #15 Wisconsin (L 55-52).
11/22/17 at Michigan State- feature game, highlighted above.
Facing a couple good Big Ten teams didn't work out for the Buffaloes, although if they could have hit a few more shots, they would have beaten Wisconsin. Now they've got a couple teams from Texas coming in over the next few days.
Stanford (Benito Sanchez) -- 3-0, 0-0 Pac 12.
No games this week for Coach Sanchez and the Cardinal.
#9 UCLA (Tim Shepard) -- 2-1, 0-0 Pac 12.
11/20/17- Hall of Fame Classic Semifinals vs. (7) #19 Richmond (L 78-75).
Tough loss there for the Bruins, as they lose their first of the season and get knocked out of their season tournament.
Washington State (DeShawn St. John) -- 1-2, 0-0 Pac 12.
11/20/17- Legends Classic Consolation Round vs. (5) UNLV (L 91-85).
11/21/17- Legends Classic 7th Place Game vs. (7) South Carolina (W 74-62).
The Cougars avoid the season tournament sweep as they get by South Carolina in the 7th place game. They've got a feel good non-conference schedule, as they don't play another power conference team until Pac 12 play starts.
Alabama (Roy Rogers) -- 1-2, 0-0 SEC.
No games this week for Coach Rogers and the Crimson Tide.
#20 Florida (Noah Oppenheimer) -- 4-0, 0-0 SEC.
11/21/17- Brooklyn Classic First Round vs. (8) Charlotte- feature game, highlighted above.
11/24/17- Brooklyn Classic Semifinal vs. (5) Temple (W 87-75).
11/25/17- Brooklyn Classic Championship vs. (2) #11 Miami (W 70-61).
Another season tournament championship for the Gators and our FOFC teams. I lost count, but I think that makes 6 FOFC teams that have won a season tournament so far this season? Congrats to Coach Oppenheimer.
#2 Kentucky (Patrick Hutt) -- 3-0, 0-0 SEC.
11/21/17- Cancun Challenge Semifinal vs. (6) Georgia State (W 82-75).
11/22/17- Cancun Challenge Championship vs. (2) #22 Texas (W 63-62).
A couple close ones this week for the Wildcats, but they survive them both and become yet another FOFC team to win a season title. Congrats to Coach Hutt.
Troy (Brett Hawkins) -- 2-2, 0-0 Sun Belt.
11/20/17- Toledo Regional First Round vs. (2) Texas A&M Corpus Christi (W 54-49).
11/21/17- Toledo Regional Championship vs. (1) Loyola MD (L 63-49).
The Trojans couldn't get over the hump in their season tournament championship, but still a nice win this week over Texas A&M-CC.
