Bear

1000 Free - 11:52.69 - before this race the coach talked with Bear and me (I become part of the conversation on the long races because I will be passing him signals through the lap counter). The coach explained that Bear's state swim averaged a split of 1:11.2...therefore, he wanted me to make sure Bears stayed at or below 35.6 (make it 35.5 so the math will be easier)...He urged Bear not to become too complacient with the second and/or third 100, as he has a tendency to do. He told me after Bear had gone to line up, that he felt Bear was capable of swimming 1:09 splits, that he didn't think he would, but he was capable...

The race started and Bear swam the following 100 splits...

1:07.69
1:10.66
1:11.60 (had to signal him to pick it up here...)
1:10.05
1:09.60
1:07.76
1:09.02
1:08.34
1:08.52
1:07.48

He dropped another 22 seconds to finish at a 11:30.72. He also managed to finish 3rd for 11 year olds. Unlike State, he won't get a medal as I mentioned before, this is by age group and there were fifteen 12 year olds that beat him, but it does motivate him for sectionals next year, as the goal of a top 10 now seems understated.

By the way...quick math on the splits indicates he average a 1:09.07 splits...
