Bill Dinneen throws a complete game 3 hit shutout as Staten Island wins easily 8-0. Steve Carlton lasts just 4.2 innings and allows 6 runs on 8 hits. Carl Furillo has a pair of doubles and knocks in 4 runs for Staten Island.

Stamford @ Kalamazoo
In the top of the 2nd Roberto Alomar singles home Tony Lazzeri to give Stamford a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd Cleon Jones triples home Ty Cobb and Jones scores on a sacrifice fly by Brian Downing to give Stamford a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 7th Bill Robinson doubles home Merv Rettenmund and then Robinson scores later on an error to get Kalamazoo back to within a run a 3-2. Dave Smith comes in to pitch the bottom of the 9th. After Mickey Tettleton strikes out looking, Willie Aikens and Buck Freeman both single to put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Dave Concepcion grounds into a double play to end the game. Jack Pfiester gets the win as he allows 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits in 7.0 innings. John Tudor gets the loss as he allowed 3 runs on 14 hits in 8.0 innings. Tony Lazzeri went 4 for 4 for Stamford.

Dayton @ Chicago
Early Wynn dominates Dayton with the exception of one inning in which they score 3 runs to get back into the game but Chicago hangs on for the 5-3 victory. Early Wynn gets the win as he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 8.0 innings. Tom Seaver is chased after allowing 4 runs in 3.0 innings. Tony Gwynn was 3 for 3 and only a triple shy of the cycle, he scored 2 runs and knocked in 3 while also walking one time.

Wichita @ Yuma
Yuma wins a 5-1 game. Nolan Ryan gets the win, allowing 1 run on 7 hits in 7.2 innings and striking out 12. Luis Gonzales had 3 hits for Yuma along with a homerun and knocked in 3 runs.

Takoma Park @ Staten Island
Jim Palmer hurls a gem but is one out away from the complete game shutout as he goes 8.2 innings and allows no runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts as Staten Island does just enough in a 3-0 victory. Curt Schilling allows 3 runs in 7.0 innings with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in the losing cause. Lou Gehrig homered for Staten Island to get them on the board and Bill Madlock added two hits and an RBI.

Stamford @ Kalamazoo
Pitching is the name of the game between Dave Dravecky and Don Newcombe. Both retire the sides in order in the 1st. Newcombe retires the side in order in the 2nd while Dravecky allows singles by Rettenmund and Freeman but gets out the jam in the 2nd. Newcombe retires the side in order in the 3rd (9 up, 9 down). Dravecky walks Johnny Evers in the 3rd but no other trouble. Newcombe retires the side in order in the 4th (12 up, 12 down). Dravecky retires the side in order in the 4th. Newcombe retires the side in order in the 5th (15 up, 15 down). Dravekcy needs just 7 pitches to retire the side in order in the 5th. Both retire the side in order in the 6th (18 of 18 for Newcombe). Newcombe retires the side in order in the 7th (21 of 21, just 6 outs away from a perfect game, if his team could score for him). Kalamazoo loads the bases on 2 singles and an error with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th but Don Newcombe flies out to end the inning. Newcombe retires Boog Powell, Mike Schmidt and Cleon Jones in order in the 8th, just 3 outs away from history (if they can score). Earle Combs walks to lead off the bottom of the 8th. Johnny Evers sacrifices him to 2nd. Bobby Thomson singles to left on a 2-1 pith, Combs runs through the stop sign and tries to score, the throw is off line and he is safe to give Kalamazoo a 1-0 lead. We go to the 9th with Kalamazoo up 1-0 and Don Newcombe 3 outs away from perfection. Ken Griffey Sr. pinch hits to lead off the inning. On a 2-1 pitch he grounds the ball between 1st and 2nd, a high hopper that Brooks Robinson gets to and flips to Newcombe covering 1st but Griffey beats it out by half a step for an infield single to ruin the perfect game. Tony Lazzeri sacrifices Griffey to 2nd. Bryan Little pinch hits and flies out to shallow right. Ty Cobb rips a line drive down the 3rd base line but Bobby Thomson makes a diving catch to end the game. Don Newcombe throes a complete game 1 hit shutout and missed a perfect game by 3 outs on an infield hit. He struck out 8 batters. Dave Dravecky gave up just 1 run on 5 hits in 8.0 innings with 2 walks and only 1 strikeout.

Dayton @ Chicago
Pitching is the name of the game today as Preacher Roe throws a complete game 4 hit shutout in a 6-0 victory for Dayton. HE walked 1 and struck out 10. Al Rosen, Hank Aaron and Lonnie Smith each had 2 RBI's for Dayton in the win. Steve Rogers gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in 6.0 innings while walking 6 and striking out 6 in the loss.

Wichita @ Yuma
Yuma gets on the board in the bottom of the 4th as Juan Gonzalez scores on a throwing error to give them a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 7th Ken Griffey Jr. leads off and rips a towering 442 foot homerun on the first pitch to tie the game 1-1. Rich Gossage comes in to pitch the bottom of the 9th. He walks Willie McGee to start the inning. McGee steals second on the next pitch. Pete Rose is then intentionally walked to set up the force. IT backfires a bit as pinch hitter Darrell Evans is walked on 4 pitches to lead the bases. Mickey Hatcher pinch hits and lifts the first pitch to deep left, it is caught at the track but they have no shot at getting McGee who tagged up and scores the winning run. Yuma wins 2-1. Mike Cuellar throws a complete game, allowing 1 run on 6 hits with 11 strikeouts. Rich Gossage drops to 0-3 in relief.

Takoma Park @ Staten Island
Takoma Park pounds out 10 runs in a 10-3 victory. Larry Jansen allows 1 run on 6 hits in 6.2 innings with 3 walks and 12 strikeouts for the win. Oral Overall allows 4 runs on 4 hits in 3.0 innings with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts and is taken deep twice. Andre Dawson homers and knocks in 5 in the win. Babe Ruth and Tommie Agee also go yard for the victors. Al Dark had a pair of hits, including a homerun and knocked in 2 for Staten Island.

Stamford @ Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo rides the high from last game in an 8-1 victory. Brett Saberhagen gets the win, allowing 1 run on 6 hits in 7.0 innings with 3 walks and 11 strikeouts. Norwood Gibson gets the loss, allowing 6 runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Bobby Thomson has 3 hits and 3 RBI's for Kalamazoo. Brett Saberhagen helped his cause with a homerun in the 6th.

Dayton @ Chicago
Pitching dominates the game as it remains scoreless through 5. In the top of the 6th Hank Aaron doubles home Joe Morgan to give Dayton a 1-0 lead. The game remains 1-0 as we go to the bottom of the 9th. Calvin Jones comes in to try to close out the game. Willie Wilson flies out to left on the first pitch, one out. Will Clark singles to right on a 3-1 pitch. Ralph Garr walks and a 3-2 pitch to put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Johnny Bench grounds to shot but the shortstop bobbles the ball and everyone is safe. The bases are loaded with one out. Jim Delahanty rips a 1-0 pitch to right center for a hit. Will Clark scores the tying run, Ralph Garr rounds third and he scores. Chicago wins 2-1. Calvin Jones gets his first loss in relief. Duane Ward improves to 3-0 with the victory in relief.

Wichita @ Yuma
Yuma wins easily behind Jerry Koosman, 7-1. Koosman improves to 4-0 as he allows 1 run on 8 hits in 7.0 innings with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Dave McNally falls to 0-4 as he allows 5 runs on 8 hits in 2.2 innings with 1 strikeout. Willie McGee is 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored in the win. Pete Rose is 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's .
