Sixty-Player Cutdown Costs Veteran Jobs

Though not surprising, the Chili Dogs list of releases to get down to the 60-player limit for the exhibition season resulted in a few veteran players seeing their final time in a Chili Dog uniform.

S Les Hornick played both cornerback and safety for the Dogs over his five seasons with the team, having been a pick in round 16 of the initial dispersal draft. The 15th year player figured to serve in only a reserve role this season, and became a post-training camp casualty as the team saw a future in players like S Jeff McCartney and CB Herman Padgett. CB Howard Kindred was another casualty from the secondary – a former first round pick, his skills were not well-suited to the team’s new coverage scheme, and he too figured to be only a reserve contributor. Both players are likely to find a chance elsewhere, we expect.

DT William Brown had been a solid reserve lineman playing from the DT position, but was beaten out in camp by new free agent signee Miles Kershner, who will presumably assume the role of run-stopping defensive line reserve.

Among our other cuts were unproven wide receivers Mickey Glover and Riddick Miller, leaving two rookies Dave Worcester and Dennis Rankin competing for presumably the final slot at the position. C Winston Nordstrom and LB Leslie Williamson round out the initial release list.
