Hey FM,

Take you time on responses...I'm glad to have you reading. By the way, you may find the two diciplines are a perfect complement. Swimming builds lots of lean muscle and creates a good bit of stamina, but because it is so repetitive it can create some restrictions in movement, whereas, Karate does a great job of keeping people limber. This should allow your son to maintain range of motion.

This may not be as obvious with your swim club, but there are quite a few swimmers with shoulders that hunch forward. That is caused by over strengthening one side of the shoulder and not maintaining flexibility. In fact, it isn't unusual for swimmers to be put on an extensive stretching program...
