Custom Historical Air Coryell/Greatest Show on Turf Playbook
Hey guys, I transcribed this playbook from Mike Martz 1999 NFL playbook with the Rams as an attempt to represent the Air Coryell/vertical offense in the FOF9 engine. There are a lot of challenges because FOF9s play design system is very simplified and cant possibly capture the nuances of NFL offensive systems, but I did what I could. The most obvious missing piece is the lack of a true H-back (aka F-back) position in FOF9s system, so I mostly had to reinterpet the position as just a 2nd running back, a Tight end, or a slot reciever, depending on the role of the Hback in a particular play. Theres also a serious dearth of nuance when it comes to routes/pass pro out of the backfield, so again I had to just interpret it as closely as I could to fit it into FOF9. Anyways feel free to download and use it as you will if it interests you.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/190I...ew?usp=sharing I will probably be transcribing either a Mike Shanahan West Coast system playbook next or a Greg Roman playbook (Kaepernick 49ers and Lamar Jackson Ravens Running QB playbook) and can post those as well if anyone wants Last edited by markdub2 : 09-23-2024 at 11:18 PM. |

Thank you so much, this is awesome! I'd love to see the Greg Roman playbook at some point.

I'm having fun with this playbook so far but one thing I've noticed is that the CPU becomes familiar with my running plays very quickly. Not sure if that's because there are relatively few running plays or because they are too similar to one another - this seems to happen most on pitch plays.
In other news, I'm 4-0 and my quarterback's TD percentage so far is double over the previous year, so make of that what you will. |

That happens when calling the same play too many times. Are you letting the AI do the gameplanning and playcalling? Its probably adding a lot of the same run play to the gameplan and ending up calling that play way too often. Normal plays (runs, passes, and play passes) out of "base" personnel packages (113, 212, 122) have the most leeway for repeat playcalls and I honestly almost never see these trigger the familiarity debuff unless theyre getting called like 10 times a game. reverses and counter runs you can really only call once or twice before the defense catches on. Also, with plays out of the rarer personnel packages like 10, empty (01/00)and heavy/jumbo/extra(13/23) you will trigger it faster than usual.(this is the worst part about trying to make true Air Raid/Spread playbooks...) If you dont want to mess with gameplanning, you might have to trim some of the pass plays and add/generate more running plays so that the AI will pick a better balance. But I have seen AI coaches trigger the familiarity defense thing even when using fully AI generated playbooks, so I really think its an AI gameplanning issue |

Yeah I let the AI handle the gameplanning and do about half the playcalling, though I found I've hit the familiarity ceiling with this playbook faster than usual. I've been replacing pass plays here and there but I'm going to pay more attention to the playcalling and see which plays tend to trigger that familiarity the most. To be clear, I never see this happen with pass plays (out of your playbook or otherwise)

Yeah ive only seen pass plays trigger it when theyre out of 10, 01 or 00 personnel, those will trigger it relatively quickly (3 or 4 calls maybe). I think out of base personnel theres some evidence youd have to call a pass like 12+times to trigger it. it might be worth checking the AI gameplans and adding more run options. I think AI gameplan generation leaves too few plays for each down and distance and ends up repeating a bunch. When ive done the gameplanning myself but then let the AI call plays, ive never had a problem with familiarity. |
