Notes:
I basically wanted to get out of this season alive and with a good base to build on.

My roster is weak at WR, I have some strength on the O-Line but it’s not nearly enough. I need a QB sometime in the future and have a huge salary cap problem with escalating salaries for veteran players.

Trading QB G. Foley and RB R. Watters to SFO was huge. The 49ers do not have a great team and the 2nd and 3rd round picks will help me in building this team. Rookie RB S. Alexander looks like he may be a good prospect in the future but it remains to be seen. It looks like T C. McIntosh may have the highest potential for me of my rookies. I’ve resigned my key players whom I might lose via free agency next season and am just hoping for the best this season and that I don’t lose so many games that I get fired.

The trade I am particularly proud of was WR Mays (who will be a free agent next year and is asking big bucks in renegotiations) LB G. Koonce (who is terribly over-paid) and CB W. Williams (5”7” CB with a HUGE salary) to DEN for CB D. O’Neal. I dropped a ton of salary cap and added what is essentially a third 1st round pick in O’Neal, who will develop into a great bookend with Springs and because he is a rookie I will be paying very little on his contract over the next 6yrs. Plus he returns kicks, and I believe that I must address every aspect of this football team, including the special teams.

Free Agent signing DE Pleasant should help me on my DL as I rebuild. WR Hastings and RB’s Hoard and and Warren should help during the transition as well.

The season ended ok with a 7-9 record and the rebuilding actually begins next season. I think I’ll need 2 good drafts and a couple of solid free agent signings to really get this team on track. I hope ownership can stick with me.

My new coaching and scouting staff’s should help a lot and are both big upgrades from last season.

I designated S R. Tongue, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep him through the season, due to salary cap considerations.

I renegotiated contracts with 3 of my top defensive players. This didn’t really save me much under the salary cap this season (less than a million for all three) but it does make the salaries more manageable in future seasons. It will also allow me to trade DE Sinclair and LB C. Brown as both have declining talent ratings and high salaries.

The Sinclair/Dawkins trade was great. The extra 2001 pick will be very helpful, as I have given myself a 2-season window to build this team via strong drafts and solid free agent signings. The same can be said for the Chad Brown trade to NOS for a 2nd rounder. Then the coup happened when I got a 2001 1st rounder from NYG for Tongue and T. J. Brown (who I signed in 2000 to help shore up my O-Line while McIntosh developed). I was able to add more current and future picks by trading a few players that were about to be free agents and or were highly paid backups.

I need help at DT as Kennedy is old although he is by far my best player at that (or any) position. I really need help at DE as well. I also need help on the O-Line. I still need a QB and LB and back up DB’s are priorities as well. I was correct last season in trading for CB O’Neal. He has developed into a fine compliment for Springs and my starting DB’s look great coming into the year.

FA Kicker O. Mare signs right away, giving me a huge boost at K, I release Peterson right away. I am giving great bids to the players who I think will step right in and help this team. RB T. Barber is a great addition. I no longer have to worry about Alexander. Barber will give me everything I need from the RB position- I intend to be a passing team when I get all me piece’s in place- Barber will give me a great rushing threat as I build my passing offense and when that is built, he’ll be able to catch the ball well for me as well as give me 1,000 yards a year rushing. Which I hope is all I’ll need. FA LB’s Bruschi and Lewis will make my run defense very solid now and Lewis help ease the loss of Brown.

I really eased the loss of Sinclair with both Porcher and Brackens signing on after training camp. They both signed for under market value and I was able to get the younger Brackens to commit for 6 years.

Shields and Milloy also signed 3 year deals for under market value, but Milloy is returning to home (of sorts, he is a Washington grad and has many friends still in Seattle) making it easy for him. McCleon and Battle will help me in back up capacity this season.

With two 1st round picks I am hoping to get talented players to fill my most glaring needs, offensive and defensive lines. When pick 14 comes there are no defensive line prospects that would merit the high choice and T McGuire looks like a winner. There is a pretty good WR, K. Szporluk, still available, but with the line a priority we take McGuire. The War room is buzzing when Szporluk is still on the board and we take him, as the best available skill-position player available.
With three 2nd and three 3rd round picks this is where I will really shape the future of my team. S Lang looks to be a solid pro and will be a very good return man as well. T Mello will develop into a player who could be a solid starter or great back-up. LB Baker will probably be a career back-up but I really need some back-up LB help. None of my picks in the 3rd round look to be starters, but will all be solid back-ups. FB Trombley is a great find with my 5th round pick (I traded my 4th round pick) as does TE Sacier. Both look like they could potentially make the starting roster. G Kaye in my 7th round was a great find as well, but will be a career back-up.

Overall I think I have added some great talent in my starting team and have a solid foundation of youth to help round out the back up talent. I am still concerned about my starting QB, but will go with Kitna for now.

I was hoping for a much better year than 8-8 as I expected to at least qualify for the playoffs. A key injury in week 5 of DE Porcher really hurt. It turned out that S L. Milloy was happy in his return to Seattle as he was voted as the teams only All-Pro (1st team) with 6 interceptions, 2 returned for TD’s.

DE A. Pleasant retiring was a surprise, but luckily I filled the position last year with quality starters, he would have been a back-up any way.

I could not afford to renegotiate T W. Jones’s contract and he was one of the highest paid players on my roster. I have some depth there with McIntosh, McGuire, and Mello all developing into fine pro’s and the signing last year of Meadows. So I exposed Jones in the Expansion draft. The Raleigh Knights made him the first pick of the expansion draft. I didn’t lose any of my other exposed players in the draft.

I didn’t need to designate a franchise player. Renegotiating Barber, Bruschi, McIver, and Bennett’s salaries did not save me a bunch of money this season but will in future seasons and in McIver and Bennett’s cases, keeps them from becoming Free Agents next year. FB Trumbley did not ask for more money but extended another year.

WR Harrison was the only Free Agent I could afford after my renegotiating, but it was a key signing and will give me a star player in my receiving corps. The rest of my free agents were signed after training camp to fill out my roster for the season.

With Bruschi’s talent ratings beginning to fade, getting a 2nd round pick from DEN was great and freed up cap room. TE Fauria was made expendable by 2nd year player Saucier’s development. Kitna is clearly not the answer at QB and Huard will do as a starter if need be, so trading Kitna to DEN with a future 7th round pick for a 4th was a no-brainer. WR Hastings was starting to fade and the signing of Harrison made him expendable. WR Williams is in the last year of his contract paying him 780K and he will demand over 2mil to resign. Packaging Hasting and Williams plus low level future picks for a 2nd round pick from WAS was a great trade. WR Jackson is also in the final year of his contract, and while I am happy with his development I cannot afford to pay the salary he is demanding at his talent level. Getting CLE to give me a 2nd round pick for Jackson (who was a 3rd round pick) was also a good trade. LB Bell would be a free agent next year and I basically traded him to open the salary cap a little and get some value in return.

Coming into the draft I still need a QB. I need depth at WR, especially after losing so many via trades. I am also concerned with DT and LB starting positions and still am looking to get more depth at DB. I also need a FB and TE that could start or contribute. P is also a position I will need to address soon.

With the 11th pick in the draft I want to pick the best player available. Florida WR Bauer will be a great #2 receiver. The 15th pick is also huge as I get LB Coffey, who looks like he could be a future All-Pro. I am forced to address my weak QB position and Paine is the best available QB when I pick in the 2nd round. Paine’s talent ratings in the top half of his chart are pretty good, but his accuracy and arm strength merit the 2nd round choice. The only reason WR Murray dropped to the 55th overall pick is that he went to Yale. But he will be a big-time player for me and was a steal. LB Finch will be an eventual starter. It helped CB Donovan that he was close by at Washington State and gave our staff a chance to see him more. Turns out we were lucky too as his talent ratings all jumped after training camp. This helps me a lot in my desire to have a solid DB unit. FB Terrell helps address our shortage at FB, something we had to do now as we traded the rest of our picks away.

I am forced to go with Huard at QB, but I have RB Barber and a fine WR corps with a developing O-Line. Things are looking good here. On defense I know I will be tough on the line and have a solid LB and DB group. I am satisified that we are building a good team here.

We began play in our new stadium this year. After a grueling 1-4 start, we had 9 straight wins from week 7 to week 15 and were 10-4 going into week 16. However, we lost the remaining two games and went 10-6. Overall I am very happy with the progress of the team this year.

I am adding more detail to my season notes, including my teams top performer in each game.

The retirement of G McIver was surprising and a big loss considering he was 1st team All-Pro last season. But we have 3 talented and young G’s to cover the loss. DT Kennedy however will be much more difficult to recover from. He was not only one of the best players on the team but the only legitimate starter at DT.

Designated DE Whitehead mostly because he was my best FA and I could get some trade value from him.

My Scout’s QB evaluating skills dropped this year from VG to G. There were no scouts available that were better so I am sticking with him this year.

I need to assure that I keep Mare, who is one of the best kickers in the game, and resigning him was a priority. FB Trombley looks to be my starter and it was time to pay him like one or lose him to free agency. S L. Milloy took a little pay cut and gave us an extra year, as did T A. Meadows.

I am confident that Barber is my RB, and S. Alexander will be asking for huge money when his contract expires. So the package of Alexander and a future 6th round pick to NYJ for a 1st round pick in 2004 was great for us.

DT and QB are my two biggest needs and I was able to address them immediately. I was forced to choose between Batch and FA QB S. King. Batch was made our priority over King because of his stronger arm and ability to hold onto the football. The FA pool was deep at DT and stealing Pryce away from DEN filled both a need and took a great player from a conference rival. DT Jackson solidified my D-Line. I now have a very potent D-Line. It turns out that the retirements of McIver and Kennedy actually helped the team as they freed up a lot of cap space.

I took care of DT and QB in Free Agency. I also have done a pretty good job on the O-Line, but I need a little more help there. Especially at C where I currently am very weak. I drafted 2 good WR’s last year, but I want to look for more in this draft as I put a large premium on quality receivers. I also have upgraded my DB unit but could use some more help there as well as some depth at LB. P is still a concern as Feagles is old.

There aren’t many choices at the 27th pick, but WR Brewer is a solid pro prospect and will help me fill my need of having a deep WR corps. Losing Alexander left a spot open at RB and with my first pick in the 2nd round I was able to get a guy in Wright that could be a potential starter in this league. Three picks later CB Rivera was an easy choice, especially with a couple of pending free agent DB's on my roster. I was looking at G S. Butler with my 2nd pick in the 2nd round and the War Room jumped when he dropped to the 59th pick. S M. Gougen will develop into a pretty good defensive player and he has above average return skills. LB Malbrough has high current talent ratings and will help me with my depth at LB. I have been looking for a TE or Center in every round and none have been good enough to merit choosing, I am running out of draft picks and take C D. Graham, who will be a back up (hopefully not a starter). My final pick of the draft had to be spent on a TE and Rogers was the best available.

After the draft I was able to pull off an amazing trade that will effect my franchise for years. Franchise Player DE W. Whitehead (who refused to sign a long-term deal due to playing time complaints) and my 1st round 2004 pick (I have the NYJ 1st round pick from the Alexander trade) for DE C. Brown. Brown is the real deal with 4 years left on his contract. This means he comes to me cheap and will be here for a while. I will undoubtedly have Brown for many, many years. Because of this trade I was able to trade aging DE Porcher to WAS for a great young C who will finally be the anchor I need on the O-Line. I was able to get a solid back up DE in Francis to help with the loss of Porcher. CB Vinson was made expendable with the drafting of CB Rivera. TE Franks signed a low 3yr deal that will help me not have to worry about the position for a couple seasons. G Tejada has the talent ratings to be a starter and maybe the reason he wasn’t signed by another club by now is that he is recovering from knee surgery. Whatever the reason I have the depth there to sign him and let him continue to rehab. Tejada’s signing will be a key factor mid-season when he is fully recovered and my team could use the infusion of talent.

Its safe to say I have high expectations going into this season.

Key injury in week 16. DE C. Brown broke his Tibia. This injury looks to drastically effect his talent ratings. This could be bad.

We made to the big dance but came short. Batch was injured in the Super Bowl and we should have went with Paine. We’ll do it next year.

My scouts RB evaluation dropped this year. There are no available scouts better. So I am stuck with him.

Looking at the progress of my team, my 2nd round draft choice last year, RB Wright, looks like he is ready to start. He showed flashes last year. He had 77 att, 364 yards, and 2 TD’s averaging 4.7 yards per. I could resign Barber and save nearly 900K on the salary cap. Instead I think I will trade him for future picks.

I’m sure I could have received more in the trade for Barber.

DE C. Brown lost about a quarter of his talent ratings to the broken Tibia he suffered last season. FA DE V. Holliday may be the answer and trying to trade Brown.

I’m not losing that much in free agency and there are no players who I should bid on. I am going for Holliday and will trade Brown pre-draft if Holliday signs my 6-year offer.

I have the Jets 1st round pick and the Bears 1st round pick, giving me the 5th and 8th picks overall. I do not have multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks as I have the past couple years. I will be looking for a back up RB with my 2nd or 3rd round picks. I also need a G, QB, FB, DT, DE, and a CB.

With my first pick in the 1st round I am tempted to take a big T prospect Blackner but I am going with the stud DE of the draft, DE E. Pritchett. T V. Blackner was taken #6 by MIN.

I am tempted to take a CB with #8 but there are a couple stud WR’s available. This means I will trade WR Murray to avoid his pending free agency.

I had too many talented players with just one year left on their contracts, so I had to trade T Mello, DT Gomez & DE King for future draft picks and sign free agent replacements. CB Springs was resigned to a multi-year extension to avoid free agency. CB O’ Neal had to be traded and Dillon will be a fine replacement. S Long will be a free agent next year so will be a franchise player next season.
