1976 World Cup

1976 BASEBALL WORLD CUP

In an effort to waste MORE time, I put together a Baseball World Cup which pitted the US team versus a World Team. The teams played a 16-game series with games played throughout various cities in FOOL.

Just thought it'd be a fun way to assemble talent and see what we could come up with. Probably too much watching the Ryder Cup that got me thinking about this...

Obviously, the US team has a TON of talent to choose from, but the World won't come as slouches I do believe. In fact, it seems the World Team comes poised with an even better pitching staff.

I tried to keep the rosters realistic, while paying homage to the stars of the game who people would want to see.

Here are the rosters:

UNITED STATES

Quote:
SP Carlos Gonzales
SP Joe Hart
SP John MacDonald
SP Clinton Miner
SP Floyd Yarbrough
MR Ray Howe
MR Kevin King
MR Pete McKeane
MR Joe Morris
MR Arturo Periera
MR Gabriel Prado
CL Orlando Diaz

C Stanford Jones
C Jesus Ramos
1B Luis Mendoza
1B Holden Matthews
2B Alberto Vargas
3B Rick Inman
SS Mel Brooks
SS Christian Larsen
LF Mac Rasmussen
CF John Hunt
RF Ron Lord
RF Carlos Vazquez
RF Alejandro Corona

INTERNATIONAL
Quote:
SP David Barajas
SP Ite Beens
SP Jesus Lopez
SP Gilbert Perreault
SP Dylan Robinson
MR Pedro Castillo
MR Samuel Godbout
MR Hiang-ta Hung
MR Corey Templeman
MR Xinpeng Tien
CL Takamasa Ishibashi

C Aurelio Torres
1B Noriaki Shimada
2B Anthony Payton
2B Hideaki Tanaka
3B Teuro Miyahara
SS Rodrigo Cruz
SS Ogai Yamazaki
LF Jose Isla
CF Rich Lang
CF Theirry Fournier
RF Cheng-qian Khu
RF Fernando Spindola

Box scores for the 16 games are attached. Naturally, the AI ran both teams and did all the hard work, all I did was select the rosters, knowing there would be guys who would be missed. That's why strange things like Mel Brooks playing short happened.

Here were the results:

Code:
GAME 1: USA 5, WORLD 4 GAME 2: USA 5, WORLD 4 GAME 3: USA 10, WORLD 3 GAME 4: WORLD 8, USA 3 GAME 5: WORLD 7, USA 3 GAME 6: WORLD 7, USA 3 GAME 7: WORLD 5, USA 3 GAME 8: WORLD 9, USA 5 GAME 9: WORLD 7, USA 6 GAME 10: WORLD 9, USA 0 GAME 11: USA 9, WORLD 8 GAME 12: WORLD 13, USA 4 GAME 13: WORLD 12, USA 0 GAME 14: USA 4, WORLD 3 GAME 15: WORLD 4, USA 3 GAME 16: USA 3, WORLD 2

WORLD WINS SERIES 12-6

I think if there is another one in four years, the USA will likely need to go with young horses, balanced with experienced vets looking for a swan song. Because the FOOL version of USA's dream team, just didn't have enough juice to go with it.

The World seemed to say "we'll beat you any way you want us to. Close, blowout, whatever you need."

Thats pretty cool there. Nice to see Colorado well represented, hopefully we can put that talent together for ourselves.

Good stuff.

I actually started to work on the American team breakdowns for a potential 16 team tournament, which would feature eight American regional teams, a team from Japan, from Cuba and from Canada by themselves for sure, and various combinations of other teams for the remainder (a Europe/Africa team, a Carribean/Dominican/Puerto Rico team, a non-Japanese Asian team, a Latin America team, still haven't nailed down the fifth team, may split one of these).

But I am just at the start. The American breakdown teams are more difficult because you can't sort by birth state. But I am hoping I can find the team to get rosters like this down and we can try something out like the WBC.

Rock on. That would be fun!
